HATTIESBURG, Mississippi– Texas State softball swept the series with Southern Miss after a 2-0 win on Sunday afternoon. Highlighting the weekend was the second complete game shutout from Maddy Azua as she allowed just four hits and struck out seven batters.
Azua struck out three consecutive batters in just 10 pitches in the bottom of the 7
th to ice the game and preserve the win for the Bobcats.
How it Happened:
The Bobcats continued their streak of scoring early against the Golden Eagles with a run in the first today. The run came by way of a sac-fly from
Ciara Trahan as she scored
Bailee Slack who had reached base from a single to short. In the bottom half of the inning, one Golden Eagle reached base from an error by
Sydney Harvey, but on the next at-bat
Aiyana Coleman turned a double play to make the bases empty again. Trahan ended the inning with a fly out.
Both sides were retired in order in the second and third, with Azua registering her first strikeout of the day.
Both sides were able to get a base runner in the fourth, but the Bobcats were unable to score, and the team's defense kept the Golden Eagles stranded at second. Similarly, in the fifth, both sides got a hit but stranded the runner on ground outs to end the inning.
Coleman was intentionally walked in the 6
th for the third straight at-bat. She'd be stranded on first after a fly and foul out, though. Azua gave up a leadoff single, but retired three straight batters afterwards to keep Southern Miss off the board.
In the top of the 7
th, Peterson added a second run off an RBI single up the middle. From there, the bases would be loaded after a
Makayla Hall hit by pitch. Coleman would go on to slap a ball down the left line, allowing Southern Miss to get the force out at third to end the inning.
Azua called game with a 10 pitch, three strikeout inning to win the game.
After the series sweep over the Golden Eagles and just one run allowed in 19 innings, Texas State is now 28-12 on the season, and 11-4 in Sun Belt play.
