HATTIESBURG, Mississippi– Texas State softball takes the series with Southern Miss after a 5-0 win on Saturday night. The Bobcats drove in five unanswered runs, highlighted by
Aiyana Coleman's 13
th home run of the season in the top of the 7
th.
Analisa Soliz and Maddy Azua combined for the shutout in the circle, allowing just three hits and striking out eight batters in the process.
How it Happened:
Texas State started off with a walk from lead off batter
Erin Peterson. She'd advance to second on a
Bailee Slack ground out. Williams and Coleman had back-to-back singles to score the first run.
Analisa Soliz started in the circle in the bottom half of the inning and struck out two batters for a scoreless frame.
Garrett led the second inning off with a triple to left field. From there, she'd score on an RBI ground out by
Kate Bubela. That run gave the Bobcats a 2-0 lead.
Soliz retired the side in order in the second, getting her third strikeout of the game in the process. She'd allow a double in the third, but keep the Golden Eagles off the board.
The fourth and the top of the fifth innings did not result in any runs. The Golden Eagles loaded the bases in the bottom of the 5
th with two outs when head coach
Ricci Woodard opted to bring in Maddy Azua to pitch. Azua would come in with a five-pitch strikeout to end the inning and preserve the Bobcats lead.
Azua retired the side in order with a strike out in the 6
th.
Small ball got the Bobcats a third insurance run in the top of the 7
th when Slack slapped a ball down the left line to score Bubela. Bubela had reached base on a double. Coleman would score slack when she hit her 13
th home run of the season to end the night of scoring for the Bobcats.
Azua would close out the game by retiring the side in order, with two strikeouts, to seal the win.
Texas State is now 27-12 on the season, and 10-4 in Sun Belt play.
