BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Both Ian Collier and Chase Mora hit their first home runs of the season in helping Texas State even up the series with Campbel on Saturday after a 9-3 victory at Jim Perry Stadium.
Â
With the win, the Bobcats improve to 8-6 while the Camels drop to 5-10.
Â
Making his first start on the mound in a TXST uniform, Alex Valentin (3-0) had another dominant performance. He was perfect for the first 4.1 innings and ended the afternoon with seven strikeouts in 6.1 innings with three runs allowed on two hits. Jackson Roberts (2-1) gave up six runs on five hits with seven punch outs and two free passes in 4.1 innings to take the loss.
Â
Out of the bullpen, Matthew Tippie tossed 1.1 scoreless innings with a strikeout and Carson Law threw a scoreless ninth inning.
Â
Collier was the lone Bobcat with multiple hits as he finished with two including his solo shot. The catcher also scored twice along with Ethan Farris. Mora led all players with two RBI.
Â
The top of the second began with Collier singling through the left side and Cole Tabor drawing a free pass. Farris reached base on a fielding error by the third baseman and he advanced to second on the play while Collier crossed the plate.
Â
Mora followed with a sacrifice fly to double the lead. A double and single off the bats of Samson Pugh and Ryne Farber, respectively, plated a run apiece to make it 4-0.
Â
The next inning saw Collier hit the first pitch to him 395 feet over the left centerfield wall to make it a five-run advantage.
Â
Mora led off the fourth by crushing a 1-1 offering 440 feet to centerfield to increase the lead to six runs. It was the junior's 24th career homer to move into a tie for 12th in program history.
Â
Campbell got on the board in the fifth on a solo home run from Joey Morton. The hosts scored twice more in the seventh to make it a 6-3 Texas State lead.
Â
The eighth started with Alan Shibley reaching on a bunt single to the second baseman and Austin Eaton singling through the right side. A 0-1 offering to Farris was hit the other way for an RBI double. A fielding error by the Camels' second baseman on a ball off the bat of Mora allowed two more runs score to increase the advantage back to six.
Â
Sunday's series finale is scheduled for a 12 p.m. CT first pitch.
