HUNTINGTON, West Virginia – Texas State softball split its day in Huntington with a 5-3 win and a 5-4 extra inning loss to the Marshall Thundering Herd on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Texas State 5, Marshall 3
Texas State started off with a
Keely Williams solo home run, her second of the season, from the three hole in the batting order.
From there, the Thundering Herd took some of the momentum though. With two runners on from a single and a walk, Maddy Azua gave up the lone scoring play of the game to the Thundering Herd. The three-run home run in the 1
st inning were the only runs the Thundering Herd would get.Â
Texas State was able to pull back a run off a
Kate Bubela RBI single in the 2
nd inning.Â
After Azua allowed a runner to reach on an error, she'd retire 13 straight batters while the Bobcats battled their way back into the game.
Texas State scored two runs in the 5
th inning off a two-run homer from birthday girl
Aiyana Coleman. Her home run also scored
Sydney Harvey, who had been walked as the lead off batter in the inning.Â
Texas State added an insurance run in the sixth inning off a
Megan Kelnar RBI single. Kelnar was 3-4 on the day, with two singles, a double and the RBI.Â
Azua would allow a double in the 7
th, but got a strike out swinging to call game and leave the runner stranded.
Texas State 4, Marshall 5 (9)
Both sides had a scoreless first frame highlighted by
Analisa Soliz starting in the circle for the Bobcats. She struck out a batter and got two more ground outs in the first.Â
The Bobcats opened the scoring in the top of the 2
nd with back-to-back singles from Kelnar and Bass to lead off the inning. They'd advance on a Trahan ground out and score on Bubela's single to. Center field. Soliz retired the batters in order in the bottom half of the inning.
The Thundering Herd would score a run on a steal of home for their first run of the game.
Neither side added any runs in the 4
th, despite both teams getting a runner on. Soliz would retire the side in the fifth.
After the Bobcats were unable to add any runs in the top of the 6
th, Azua came on to pitch in the bottom of the 6
th and close the game out. She struck out two batters with a runner in scoring position to get out of the 6
th inning with the lead.
Texas State extended its lead in the 7
th to two when Trahan doubled up the middle to score Kelnar.Â
Despite the two-run lead, Marshall came back to equalize the game in the bottom half of the inning and force extra innings. After tying the game on a 2 RBI single, the Bobcats were forced to extras for the first time in conference play.
Texas State would go ahead on an RBI single from Coleman in the top of the 8
th, but Marshall answered with a solo home run of their own to force a 9
th inning.Â
Marshall walked off the win with another solo home run to win the game 5-4.
After today's two games, Texas State is 21-10 on the season and 5-4 in Sun Belt play.

Texas State will continue the road to finish its halted game and play another against the Sam Houston Bearkats on April 2.  The halted game will resume at 4 pm, with the next game to be played shortly after.Â
