Late Comeback Falls Short

SAN ANTONIO – Texas State's bat were quiet for the first six innings of Tuesday's game at Roadrunner Field. Over the final three innings, the Bobcats scored nine runs but fell short of coming from behind in a 12-9 loss to UTSA.

TXST drops to 11-13 on the season while the Roadrunners are now 20-7.

Picking up the win on the rubber was Gunnar Brown (2-0) after he threw five scoreless innings with seven strikeouts and giving up just two hits and walks. Jackson Mayo (0-2) surrendered three runs on two free passes and one hit in his first start of the season to take the loss.

Colby Diaz threw two innings of relief out of the bullpen and struck out two. Dylan Kerbow also recorded two punch outs on the three outs he recorded. Both Josh Glaser and Braylen Timmins had three strikeouts in scoreless innings.

Going 2-for-2 with two doubles, two walks, one RBI and scoring once was Dawson Park. A 2-for-5 day was recorded by Theo Kummer, who also drove in three, scored twice and hit a home run. Both Chase Mora and Justin Vossos finished with two RBI and hit a homer each. Recording his first hit in a TXST uniform was Travis Bragg with a pinch hit single in the eighth.

UTSA would get on the scoreboard first when Mason Lytle worked a leadoff walk after facing 12 pitches, advanced to second on a ground, moved up to third on a fly out to right center and scored on a TXST throwing error that would have ended the frame. The hosts were able to then load the bases but a groundout to Ryne Farber ended the frame to limit the damage to a run.

The Roadrunner added to their lead with four runs in the second. They would add a combined five runs over the fourth and fifth innings to go up by 10.

With one gone in the seventh, Vossos lifted a 1-1 offering 376 feet over the left field wall for his second home run of the season and to put Texas State on the scoreboard. With Dawson Park on first base after a walk, Mora crushed a 2-2 pitch 370 feet to left field for his second round tripper in as many games and cut the deficit to 10-3.

Kummer singled back up the middle with two outs in the top of the eighth. It would be the first of four consecutive base knocks for the Bobcats. A single by Vossos and double off the bat of Park plated a run apiece to make it a five-run contest.

A dropped fly ball that would have been the third out in the bottom of the frame led to UTSA scoring two runs to extend its advantage back to seven.

In the ninth, Mora started things off by drawing a free pass on four pitches and Alan Shibley followed with a single to right field. Farber would reach base on a fielder's choice that saw Shibley get retired at second but put runners on the corners. A 1-2 pitch was hit by Ian Collier to the first baseman, who threw to second to try and put Farber out. However, the throw was high and allowed the sophomore shortstop to advance to third while Mora also scored.

Kummer would then smash a 1-1 offering 385 feet down the left field line for his first home run of the season. The four-bagger cut the deficit to three runs. However, the next two batters would be retired to close out the game.
