SAN MARCOS, Texas – Errors and free bases proved to be costly for Texas State on Friday night in a 7-0 loss to Coastal Carolina at Bobcat Ballpark in the series opener. The Bobcats ended up walking or plunking 12 Chanticleers and committed two errors in the contest.
Â
With the result, TXST is now 11-14 on the season and 3-4 in the Sun Belt Conference while CCU improved to 19-7 overall and 5-2 in league play.
Â
Picking up the win on the mound was Jacob Morrison (5-0) after throwing seven shutout innings with 10 strikeouts and scattering five hits. Alex Valentin (4-1) took the loss despite recording his second straight quality start as he tossed six frames with three strikeouts. However, he allowed three runs on two hit batters, three hits and seven walks.
Â
Braylen Timmins went 2.1 innings out of the bullpen with three strikeouts but gave up four runs on two hits. Josh Glaser recorded the final two outs against the Chanticleers via punch outs.
Â
Going 2-for-4 at the plate was Ian Collier and Alan Shibley. Collier had the team's lone extra-base hit of the night with a double. Also recording a hit on the evening was Rocco Garza-Gongora, Dawson Park and Justin Vossos.
Â
The Chanticleers threatened first in the third when they were able to load the bases. Valentin was able to get out of the two-out jam by getting a strikeout. The visitors would get on the board in the next inning on an RBI single that was assisted by a hit by pitch and a walk.
Â
In the bottom of the fourth, Collier doubled off the right field wall. The next pitch saw Garza-Gongora get plunked to put two on with one out. However, Morrison got a strikeout and induced a fly out to get out of the inning unscathed.
Â
CCU took advantage with two more runs that were scored on a fielding error.
Â
Neither team threatened again until the ninth. A walk, single and hit by pitch saw the Chanticleers load the bases with one out. Walker Mitchell then hit a 2-1 offering over the left centerfield wall for a grand slam for the final runs of the game.
Â
With two outs in the next half inning, Vossos singled to left and he would later advance to second on fielder's indifference. Shibley was able to beat out a grounder to the first baseman for an infield single to put runners on the corners. However, a groundout to the third baseman wrapped up the contest.
Â
Game two of the series is scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. first pitch on Saturday.
