SAN MARCOS, Texas – Freshman Caden Baker and Dawson Park both hit their first collegiate home runs in helping Texas State claim a 5-4 win over Arkansas State on Saturday from Bobcat Ballpark. The victory clinched the series for the Bobcats, their first since sweeping opening weekend.
Â
With the result, both TXST and the Red Wolves are 10-12 on the season and 2-3 in the Sun Belt Conference.
Â
Matthew Tippie (1-0) picked up his first win of the season coming out of the bullpen. He struck out three in two innings and gave up a run on three hits. Bryson Dudley recorded the final three outs of the game, two by a strikeout, to earn his first save of the season. Kole Turner (1-1) gave up a run on two hits and a wild pitch to take the loss.
Â
Jesus Tovar recorded his first quality start of the season as he went a season-high six innings and struck out six while giving up three runs on eight hits.
Â
Seven different Texas State batters recorded a hit on the afternoon. Both Baker and Park drove in two runs apiece. Samson Pugh scored twice and Ryne Farber hit a double and scored once.
Â
With two gone in the bottom of the second, Pugh hit a ball into the hole for an infield single. Baker followed by sending a 1-1 pitch to left center. The ball traveled 388 feet and hit off the wall. The Red Wolf centerfielder slipped, which allowed the ball to ricochet into center field. Hustling around the bases, Baker slide in across home plate for an inside the park home run.
Â
ASU responded with two runs on a two out double in the next half inning.
Â
Park led off the bottom of the frame with a 414-foot solo homer to left center to put the Bobcats back in the lead.
Â
Again, it would be a short-lived advantage as the Red Wolves scored once in the top of the fourth.
Â
In the bottom of the seventh, two walks and a Justin Vossos bunt single loaded the bases. Park worked a free pass to bring in a run to put TXST ahead 4-3.
Â
ASU responded back for the third time in the contest in the next half inning. The visitor's run came on a catcher's balk when a pitch saw the ball bounce and get caught in Theo Kummer's chest protector.
Â
Farber started the bottom of the frame with a double that landed just in the field of play down the left field line. After Ian Collier's hard-hit single put runners on the corners, a pitch went through the catcher's five-hole for a wild pitch and allowed Farber to score the eventual game-winning run.
Â
Dudley closed out the game by getting Cross Jumper looking on a third strike call.
Â
Sunday's series finale is scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
