Softball Shuts Out Wichita State for Midweek Win

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State softball put together a complete game for a 5-0 shutout win against the Wichita State Shockers on Wednesday night.

Highlighting the night was back-to-back home runs from Keely Williams and Aiyana Coleman. Williams home run was her first as a Bobcat. That, paired with Emma Strood and Maddy Azua combining for just three hits allowed and an errorless game from the Bobcat defense solidified the 5-0 win on the night.

WHAT HEAD COACH RICCI WOODARD SAID: "That was one of the best games we've played overall all year long. We pitched well, we hit well, we played good defense. I just thought it was a good, clean game for us."

WHAT CF KEELY WILLIAMS SAID: "This game is kind of like a refresh for us. We swept last weekend and did our jobs, but it's the same thing now. We're just going to keep working at it, and this weekend it's the same thing."

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Strood started in the circle for the Bobcats, tossing the first five innings to improve her record to 8-3 on the year with a win. She allowed just two hits and struck out two batters, including one in the first inning.

Megan Kelnar and Erin Peterson combined for the third out in the first inning, catching the Shockers runner stealing at second base.

Texas State was retired in order in the bottom half of the 1st, but their bats came alive in the second. Ciara Trahan reached from a fielder's choice, she'd go on to score on a Megan Kelnar RBI. Kelnar had advance to second base on the throw of her single, going on to score when Mayson Garrett doubled down the line. The Bobcats led 2-0 after two innings.

Strood retired the batters in order in the third, and the Bobcats turned a double play in the fourth to keep the shockers off the board through four innings.

In the fifth, the Bobcats added some insurance runs to the game. After Erin Peterson singled to right, the pair would score on Williams home run out to right field. Coleman followed that up with a full-count home run of her own to make it a 5-0 game. The Bobcats scored all three of its runs in the fifth on two outs.

Azua came in to close the game out in the top of the 6th, which she would do while allowing just one hit. The Bobcats were able to put the ball into play in the 6th, but scored no additional runs.

The Bobcats turned a classic 5-4-3 double play to end the game in the top of the 7th.
Texas State is now 19-6 on the season and 3-0 in Sun Belt play.
