SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State softball stayed perfect in conference play with a 6-4 win over App State on Sunday afternoon.
Despite being outhit by the Mountaineers, the Bobcats were able to find ways to get on base and score runs, scoring six in the first two innings of the game to go up and get the win. Highlighting the night was a two hit, two run night for freshman
Erin Peterson as the lead off batter.
WHAT HEAD COACH RICCI WOODARD SAID:Â "Every weekend is going to be the grits on Sundays. Having to dig in and go. I like the way we came out, and we were able to hold on and just keep fighting, which is what Sunday's is going to be about for us."
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Emma Strood started in the circle for the Bobcats, tossing the first 2.1 innings. She's strike out the first batter of the day.
Texas State was able to find ways to get on base in the first, starting with a full-count walk for
Erin Peterson. She'd steal second and advance to third on
Bailee Slack's ground out. Back to back walks for
Keely Williams and
Aiyana Coleman loaded the bases. From there,
Karmyn Bass would hit a sac-fly to right field to score one run. Following that up was an RBI single for
Megan Kelnar to score Coleman.Â
App State opted for a pitching change after the Bobcats went up 3-0.
Ciara Trahan would score on a wild pitch to make it a 4-0 game.
App State hit a solo home run in the top of the 2
nd to make it a 4-1 game.
Texas State answered with two of their own runs, though, off a
Keely Williams sac-fly and
Bailee Slack stole home after getting on base from a throwing error.
App State added two more runs in the top of the third off a 2 RBI single to left field. They'd add their fourth and final run in the fifth off a throwing error while the Bobcats tried to throw a runner out at second.
Despite Texas State loading the bases in the 6
th, they were unable to score any more runs. A clutch final inning from Maddy Azua with two fly outs and a strikeout sealed the win for the Bobcats.
Texas State is now 18-6 on the season and 3-0 in Sun Belt play.
