BOONE, N.C. – Texas State was able to come back from seven down to tie the game in the middle innings. However, it would be App State coming away with a 10-8 win on Sunday afternoon at Smith Stadium in the series finale.
Â
With the result, the Bobcats fall to 8-11 overall and 0-3 in the Sun Belt Conference while the Mountaineers are now 11-8 on the season and 3-0 in conference play.
Â
Picking up the win was Conner Barozzino (1-2) after he threw 1.1 scoreless innings while Jordan Fisher recorded the final three outs to pick up his fourth save of the season. John Alkire (0-1) took the loss as he surrendered the go-ahead run while striking out one in two innings.
Â
The duo of Jackson Mayo and Matthew Tippie worked two innings apiece out of the bullpen as well. Tippie recorded four strikeouts while not allowing a run over the final two frames of the contest.
Â
At the plate, Theo Kummer went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Both Austin Eaton and Alan Shibey scored twice while Shibley drove in two runs and Eaton plated one. Also finishing with two base knocks and scoring a run were Ryne Farber and Chase Mora.
Â
It was a rough start for the Texas State pitchers. App State scored six runs in the first inning and added one more in the third to take a seven-run lead.
Â
The Bobcats were able to load the bases in the fifth when Shibley led off with an infield single, Eaton was plunked and Cole Tabor drew a walk. Justin Vossos drove in a run on a slow groundout to the third baseman. Kummer followed with a single to left that saw Eaton score. Tabor attempted to score on the play but collided with the catcher, who stepped directly into his runner's lane before catching the ball, and was tagged out to end the frame.
Â
In the sixth, Shibley doubled down the right field line to bring home two and Eaton followed with a double of his own to drive in a run. The runs kept coming when Dawson Park grounded out to the third baseman that brought home Eaton. An RBI single through the left side by Kummer plated the final run of the frame and tied the game at 7-7.
Â
App State answered backed in the bottom of the frame with three runs.
Â
Kummer drove in his third run of the game when he grounded out to the second baseman that allowed Park to score to cut the deficit to 10-8.
Â
Texas State was able to load the bases in the top of the ninth with two outs behind a Farber double and back-to-back hit by pitches. However, a strikeout wrapped up not only the game but the series.
Â
Next for the Bobcats is a four-game week at home that starts on Tuesday when Baylor comes to town for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
