SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State softball staged itself a come-from-behind win to take its series with App State on Saturday afternoon. After allowing four runs in the second inning, the Bobcats scored six unanswered runs to win 7-4.
Highlighting the night was a career-best 13 strikeouts from sophomore Maddy Azua. That, paired with home runs from
Aiyana Coleman and
Kate Bubela propelled the Bobcats to the win and kept them undefeated in Sun Belt play.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Azua started in the circle for the Bobcats, tossing the complete game which included 13 strikeouts, a career best for her. She allowed just five hits and the four runs for the Mountaineers while walking two batters.
The Bobcats got on the board first in the first inning, off a Coleman sac-fly which scored
Erin Peterson.
From there, though, App State scored four in the top of the 2
nd. After four hits and a walk in the inning and a throwing error by
Bailee Slack, the Bobcats found themselves in a 4-1 deficit.
From there, though, the Bobcats battled back. The Bobcats scored on a throwing error by App State's third basemen to make it a 4-2 game.
It took until the fifth inning for the Bobcats to find more runs, but three came in that inning for them to reclaim the lead. Starting off the scoring was Bubela's home run. From there,
Keely Williams reached on a fielders choice and she'd score on Coleman's 2 RBI home run. Coleman put the Bobcats ahead in the fifth inning.
The Bobcats added two more insurance runs in the sixth off a Bubela RBI single, she'd also cross the plate on
Bailee Slack's at-bat to make it a 7-4 game.
Azua closed out the game in the circle with her 13
th strikeout to the second batter for the Mountaineers.
