SAN MARCOS, Texas – Nine hits from eight different batters and some timely defensive plays from the Bobcats helped Texas State to an 8-2 win to open up conference play. Highlighted a solo home run from
Mayson Garrett and a 2 RBI night for
Ciara Trahan, the Bobcats started conference play on the right foot.
WHAT HEAD COACH RICCI WOODARD SAID: "We just talked as a team about how we gave them momentum for way too many innings in my opinion. That's the only thing I want them to do a little bit better job of is figuring out how to get the momentum back earlier in the game."
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Emma Strood started in the circle for the Bobcats, tossing the first 3.2 innings and two runs while striking out three batters. She started the first inning with two strikeouts to get the Bobcats off to a good start.
From there, the Bobcats scored four runs in the first inning. Starting things off was a walk for
Erin Peterson and a
Keely Williams single to right field. Peterson would score on
Aiyana Coleman's single to left field. That was followed up by a
Karmyn Bass RBI single. To score the final two runs of the inning,
Ciara Trahan would single up the middle to score
Kate Bubela and Bass.
App State didn't score any runs until the third inning, when they'd score on a wild pitch. They'd add another in the fourth off an RBI single, their only two runs of the night.
After turning a 1-2-3 double play, Strood was subbed out and Maddy Azua was brought in to close the game out.
In the bottom of the 4
th,
Mayson Garrett hit a solo home run to left field to make it a 5-2 game.
Texas State capitalized on errors and strung together hits in the 6
th inning to score three more runs, making it an 8-2 game.
Texas State would close out the top of the inning without allowing another run, winning 8-2 and improving to 16-6 on the season. Texas State is 1-0 in Sun Belt Conference play.
