Bobcats Win 2-1 vs San Diego for First Win of the Season

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State Softball didn't take long to find itself in the win column, getting a 2-1 win over San Diego on Friday night courtesy of a Megan Kelnar RBI double, and capitalizing on a San Diego error.

Pitcher Emma Strood, who transferred to the Bobcats from LSU this season, got her first start and win of her career as a Bobcat tonight in her one-run outing against the Torreros. Freshman Erin Peterson also had the first hit of her collegiate career, a single as the game's leadoff batter.

Karmyn Bass, Kate Bubela and Sydney Harvey also recorded hits tonight, with Bubela and Bass now having hits in both of the Bobcats games this season.

What Head Coach Ricci Woodard said: "I don't think we're even close to ourselves offensively so to still be able to pull out a win tells me that we're going to be a great team when this is all said and done, we just have to get in our groove and find it."

What Pitcher Emma Strood said: "[To get the first win of the season] feels good. We were able to bounce back from Arkansas and in a close game we were able to get our first win of the season. I'm glad to have Maddy [Azua] behind me."

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Peterson started things off well with her single to right field to get on base. She'd advance all the way to third on two groundouts, but Aiyana Coleman grounded out to short to end the inning before she could score.

The Bobcats took the lead in the bottom of the second, though, off Kelnar's double. Bubela had gotten on base from a single through the left side, and scored on the double. Harvey then got on base from a single down the left field line. Harvey and Kelnar would both advance on a throwing error by the Torreros catcher that went array, allowing Kelnar to score.

The Bobcats would piece together hits through the next few innings, but were unable to put up any runs.

In the 5th inning, the Torreros got a run on the board off a pair of singles, but that would be their lone run of the night.

In the top of the 6th, Maddy Azua came in for Strood to close the game out. Strood ended the night with three strikeouts and no walks while giving up just one run. Azua closed the game out with just one hit allowed and back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.

Texas State is now 1-1 on the season.
