SAN MARCOS, Texas – For the first time in her career, sophomore pitcher Maddy Azua was named Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon.

Azua was named Sun Belt Conference Preseason Pitcher of the Year ahead of the start of the 2025 season. In just the second week of the year, Azua was tabbed for the conference's weekly honor for the first time.

Azua was a key part of the Bobcats 6-0 weekend as she made three appearance this week, registering 18.2 innings of work while tallying a 1.15 ERA along the way. She had two wins and a complete game shutout against New Mexico on Feb. 15. Azua allowed just three runs while walking four batters and striking out 25. Of the just 11 hits she allowed, only two were for extra bases. Throughout her three appearances, batters averaged .167 against her.

The Bobcats will return to action this evening, Feb. 18 against in-state foe Sam Houston. The Bobcats will then stay home for the San Marcos Classic this Feb. 21-23 as they host Kansas, Southern Illinois and Creighton inside Bobcat Softball Stadium.
