Baseball Claims Series Over Binghamton

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The first series of the season has gone in Texas State's favor after winning Saturday 8-7 over Binghamton at Bobcat Ballpark. It is the fourth consecutive year and sixth time in the last seven years that the Bobcats have won the opening weekend series.

With the win, TXST is now 2-0 on the young season while the Bearkats drop to 0-2.

Colby Diaz (1-0) earned his first collegiate win after throwing three scoreless innings of relief with four strikeouts. Carson Laws got the last three outs of the game to pick up his second save of the year. Taking the loss was Hayden Tarsia as he allowed two runs on four hits while striking out three in 2.2 innings of the bullpen.

Starting on the rubber for the Bobcats was Sam Hall, who went four frames and struck out four but allowed two runs on four walks and two hits. Matthew Tippie and Alex Valentin recorded two and one outs, respectively, in relief.

At the plate, every starter for Texas State had at least one hit. The trio of Coy DeFury, Austin Eaton and Zachary Gingrich led the way with two base knocks apiece. Ryne Farber finished the afternoon with three RBI while DeFury and Gingrich each scored twice.

Binghamton struck first with two runs in the first with one each coming in via a single and walk.

The bottom of the second began with DeFury singling through the left side and Austin Munguia being hit by a pitch. Two batters later, Farber sent a 0-1 pitch to left center for a double and brought home both runners to tie the game.

In the third, Gingrich single to center, Ethan Farris was plunked and DeFury hit a single to load the bases. A 2-2 pitch was sent the other way to deep right field by Samson Pugh. It was caught but allowed all the runners to advance a base and put TXST in front.

The scoring continued in the frame with one run apiece being driven in by Dawson Park and Munguia on singles through the left side.

The score stayed the same until the fifth when Evin Sullivan hit a grand slam to left field that put the Bearkats back in front at 6-5.

Eaton led off the sixth with a single to center and Gingrich followed with a double off the centerfield wall to put two runners in scoring position. After a pitching change, Farris grounded out to the shortstop that plated a run to tie the game. DeFury extended the advantage with a sac fly to left center.

Jackson Mitchell would have trouble finding the strike zone as he threw 12 consecutive balls to walk Munguia, Park and Pugh. Following a call to the bullpen, Farber worked a walk to bring in another run that extended the lead to 8-6.

The Bearkats were able to scratch across a run in the ninth on a Sullivan single down the left field line. Laws was able to induce a double play to end the game.

The final game of the weekend series will see first pitch at 11 a.m. from Bobcat Ballpark.
