Bobcats Take Season Opener Over Bearkats

SAN MARCOS, Texas – For the seventh consecutive year, Texas State (1-0) won its season opener when it defeated Binghamton (0-1) 4-1 on Friday night from Bobcat Ballpark.

Picking up the win on the rubber was Bryson Dudley (1-0) after throwing three scoreless innings of relief with five strikeouts. Carson Laws set the Bearkats down in order in the ninth that saw him record two punch outs to pick up his first save of the season. Suffering the loss was Ryan Bates (0-1) as he gave up two runs in four innings while striking out seven.

Jackson Teer got the start and recorded seven strikeouts over 3.2 innings while giving up a run on three hits. Matthew Tippie had one strikeout in an inning of relief and Braylin Timmins recorded one out in his Bobcat debut.

At the plate, Ryne Farber was 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and scored once. Samson Pugh went 2-for-3 with a double and scored a run. Both Austin Eaton and Ethan Farris recorded an RBI apiece.

Farber led off the bottom of the first with a double and Rashawn Galloway would be walked on four pitches. Eaton hit a slow grounder to the Bearkat second baseman. They got an out at second but Eaton beat the throw to first, which allowed Farber to score after he stole third earlier in the at-bat.

After a walk to Zachary Gingrich, Farris sent a 0-2 offering back up the middle to plate a run to double the lead.

Pugh started the next inning off with a double off the centerfield wall and Dawson Park was hit by a pitch. However, they would be stranded and the Bobcats' offense would be stifled until the seventh.

Binghamton would get on the board in the top of the third when Matt Bolton hit an inside the park home run in his first collegiate plate appearance. He became the third player in as many years to hit a round tripper in their first collegiate plate appearance after Pugh in 2024 and Chase Mora in 2023.

The bottom of the seventh began with Coy DeFury reaching base as the Bearkat shortstop dropped a popup down the left line and advanced to second. Pugh laid down a bunt that resulted in a single after a miscue in covering first base by the visitors. He would then swipe second to get out of a possible double player opportunity. The next pitch saw a balk get called that brought DeFury home to increase the lead.

Farber followed by singling through the right side of the drawn-in infield on the first pitch he saw to make it a 4-1 TXST advantage.

Tippie and Laws set the Bearkats down in order in the eight and ninth frames, respectively, to close out the game.

Game two of the series takes place on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. from Bobcat Ballpark.
