SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State softball got itself back in the win column courtesy of a solo homer by
Aiyana Coleman and two RBI doubles from
Keely Williams and
Abby Garza.
Coleman's home run was the first of the Bobcats this season. Williams reclaimed the lead for the Bobcats with her second RBI of the season, while Garza's RBI double was her first career hit.
What Head Coach Ricci Woodard said:Â "We finally got some timely hits. We have to get more timely hits as the ball game goes so we don't keep people around."
What Pitcher Maddy Azua said: "I think I had a lot of confidence in this game. Again, not letting the one home run get to me, not letting any one thing get to me. I think now I've realized and had more experience to let me get past the little things that used to bother me."
What Center Fielder Keely Williams said: "This whole week we've been working on mechanics and approach … combining those two [skills] and then putting it on the field, I thought we did a pretty good job tonight."
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Maddy Azua started in the circle for the Bobcats and tossed the complete game. After giving up a hit on the first at-bat, she went on to strike out two batters in the inning, and a third in the top of the second.
Coleman got the first run of the game in the 2
nd hitting, off a solo home run out to right field. That was her first career home run as a Bobcat, and the first of the 2025 season for Texas State.Â
Azua gave up a solo homer in the top of the 4
th to tie the game. Despite that, though, she struck out two more batters to get out of the inning with just a 1-1 scoreline.
Texas State was able to load the bases in the fourth, but were unable to put any runs on the board. Despite a
Ciara Trahan single and walks from Garza and
Mayson Garrett, a
Sydney Harvey ground out to short would end the inning.
Both sides went three up, three down in the fifth and Azua tallied another strikeout in the top of the 6
th.Â
In the bottom of the sixth, though, Williams was able to get her RBI double. After Coleman reached on an error by the Ladyjacks first basemen, Williams doubled to center field to get the 2-1 lead. From there, Williams advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Garza's double.
Azua would end the game on a strikeout swinging for her sixth strikeout of the night.
