JONESBORO, Ark. – Senior
Mady Soumare scored a goal Thursday afternoon to extend her points streak to four matches. Her goal was the lone tally of the match for either team as Texas State left the A-State Soccer Park with a 1-0 victory over Arkansas State.
Â
The win extended the Bobcats' unbeaten streak to five matches as they improved to 7-2-3 overall and 4-0-1 in the Sun Belt Conference. The Red Wolves fell to 2-4-4 on the season and 0-3-2 in league play.
Â
"Any team can tell you that this is one of the toughest places to play for many reasons. To come away from this game with three points is a great result," said head coach
Steve Holeman.
Â
Soumare paced all players with four shot attempts and placed three of them on frame. TXST ended up outshooting the hosts 14-7 after the teams both took five shots in the opening 45 minutes.
Â
Brooklyn Escobar recorded her third shutout of the season and needed to make only two saves.
Â
"We definitely didn't play our best in the first half but turned things around at halftime," said Holeman. "We spent a lot of time in their half and created quite a few quality chances. At the end of the day, we were able to convert and get the W."
Â
The Red Wolves had the best opportunity in the first half. That came in the sixth minute on a counter with Alexia Watts taking a shot from just outside the 18-yard box. Escobar made a kick save to keep the match scoreless.
Â
Early in the 48th minute,
Chloe Jones tried a cross from the right side that deflected off an ASU defender. The ball bounced to in front of the goal. Another defender's clearance attempt was bungled and went directly to Soumare, who was just outside the six-yard box. She sent a low, left-footed shot inside the right post for her fourth goal of the season.
Â
The goal was also the 17th of Soumare's Texas State career. She is now tied for ninth on the program's career list with Kassi Hormuth, Lauren Prater and Natalie Holder.
Â
Lilah Dupree almost doubled the lead midway through the 79th minute. A short cross from
Katrin Agustsdottir was pushed away from goal by a defender to the middle of the field. Dupree ran up for a hard strike that saw Damaris Deschaine make a diving stop.
Â
With just over five minutes left in the match,
Matsuri Tsutsui dribbled into the box. She sent a bending right-footed shot towards the back post. The ball ended up sailing just wide of the post for a goal kick.
Â
Next up for the Bobcats is a home match on Sunday against Louisiana at 1 p.m.
