Women's Basketball Back on the Road at Georgia Southern, Old Dominion

SAN MARCOS, Texas— Two more road games are ahead for Texas State women's basketball as they head to Georgia Southern and Old Dominion this week.
 
Texas State will head to Statesboro for a Jan. 15 game with Georgia Southern. That game will tip off at 5 pm (CT) with a stream on ESPN+. The Bobcats date with ODU will be Jan. 18 at noon (CT) also streaming on ESPN+.
 
SERIES HISTORY
With the Eagles:
  • Texas State has a 10-5 record all-time against Georgia Southern.
  • Texas State lost both meetings with the Red Wolves in the 2023-24 season, once by a 69-70 score, once by a 70-72 score. The 70-72 scoreline came in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
  • Prior to those two losses, Texas State was on a four-game win streak.
With the Monarchs:
  • Texas State has a 1-1 record against the Monarchs.
  • Last season, the Bobcats lost 66-58 at home on Jan. 31 to the Monarchs.
  • The lone time the Bobcats have gone to Norfolk they won 52-46.

MEET THE ROSTER
  • The Freshmen: Texas State has four freshman, Heather BaymonSaniya BurksTakeira Ramey, and Melinda Winston.
    • Three of the four freshmen played high school basketball in the state of Texas (Burks, Baymon, Winston) while Ramey is the lone freshman coming from out of state.
    • All four freshman have seen minutes and scored this season. Both Burks and Ramey have become mainstays in the Bobcats starting lineup.
  • The Transfers: Texas State has added six transfers, including five Division I transfers. 
  • The Returners: Antoine returns five members from 2023-2024 to this year's team.
 
OFF THE BENCH AND FROM THE PAINT
  • Texas State is currently ranked No. 28 in the nation for its average of 27.2 bench points a night. The Bobcats have outscored their opponent's bench in all but three of their games so far.
  • All 15 Bobcats have played in a game and scored this season.
  • The Bobcats are prolific in the paint this season. Texas State has scored 474 of its 911 points in the paint this season. Texas State is outscoring opponents 474-434 in the paint.
 
AROUND THE SUN BELT
  • Texas State was picked to finish 10th in the Sun Belt Conference preseason poll. Last season the Bobcats finished 4-14 in conference which that saw them finish 13th in the regular season standings.
  • After week three of conference play, the Bobcats are 2-3 and sit in 8th place in the Sun Belt.

ABOUT THE EAGLES
  • Georgia Southern finished the 2023-24 season with a 15-18 record, going 4-14 in Sun Belt play.
  • They are currently 8-9 this season and 1-4 in conference play.
  • The Eagles are coming off a 85-68 loss to James Madison. They beat Georgia State 82-57 last week as well.
  • The Eagles are led by 2nd year head coach Hana Haen who carries a 36-13 record in her career. This is her first season at Georgia Southern since leaving Georgia Southwestern, where she had a 28-4 record. 
  • The Eagles leading scorer is Nicole Gwynn who has 209 points so far this season, averaging 12.29 a night. Indya Green leads with 135 rebounds this season, averaging 7.94 a night.
ABOUT THE MONARCHS
  • Old Dominion finished the 2023-24 season with a 22-10 record, going 12-6 in Sun Belt play. 
  • They are currently 12-5 this season and 4-1 in conference play, with their lone loss being to Coastal Carolina. 
  • The Monarchs are led by 7th year head coach DeLisha Milton-Jones who has a 125-80 record in her career. In her five seasons at Old Dominion she is 93-48 all-time.
  • The Monarch's leading scorer is En'Dya Buford who has 208 points so far this season for an average of 12.24 per game. Simone Cunningham leads with 105 rebounds for 6.18 a night, followed closely by 103 from Buford.
  • The Monarchs will host App State on Jan. 15 before the Bobcats come to town.

Texas State will return home after this road trip for games with Troy and ULM. The Bobcats game with Troy will tipoff at 11 am as part of the team's 'Kids Game' which will have local school children in attendance.
