HATTIESBURG, Miss. – A physical contest saw Texas State leave the Bell Marshall Complex with a 1-0 win over Southern Miss on Sunday. The win ended a seven-match road winless streak in Sun Belt Conference matches.
Â
TXST improved to 6-3-3 on the season and 2-0-1 in conference play while the Golden Eagles drop to 1-6-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the Sun Belt.
Â
"Sunday road wins are very tough to come by. Our team did some really good things today and it was great to get three points out of this," said head coach Steven Holeman. "Our defense held strong and we created some quality chances. Really proud of the teams' effort today."
Â
Over the first 12 and a half minutes of the contest, Texas State attempted four shots but only saw one being on frame. That came off the foot of
Mya Ulloa. The rest of the first half was dominated by USM, which held the Bobcats without a shot while taking four itself but with one being on target.
Â
The second half began with the Bobcats dominating possession and taking six shots to none for the hosts over the first 16 minutes.
Â
Mady Soumare had the breakthrough early in the 64th minute. She battled through a couple of defenders on the end line to eventually get a shot off. Her attempt hit off the goalkeeper's hands and into the far side netting for her sixth goal of the season.
Â
The Eagles had a couple of good opportunities afterwards to tie the contest. None of the three total attempts were put on frame.
Â
Soumare nearly put the match away early in the 88th minute.
Zoe Junior ran on to a long ball down the field and eventually passed it to an oncoming Soumare. The Parisian took a shot from 15 yards out that sailed just over the crossbar.
Â
The Bobcats ended the match with an 14-9 advantage in shots with five attempts coming from
Victoria Meza and three by Soumare. Only one shot on goal was allowed by Texas State's defense, which was easily handled by
Caitlyn Draper for lone save of the afternoon.
