SAN MARCOS, Texas – Trailing at halftime, Texas State (6-3-4, 2-0-2 Sun Belt) scored once in the second half to claim a come from behind 2-2 draw against Arkansas State (3-3-3, 0-2-1 Sun Belt) Friday night at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
Â
The Bobcats held a 20-12 advantage in shots and placed nine of their attempts on frame compared to five for the Red Wolves.
Zoe Junior led the way with four attempts while the trio of
Sydney Bassa,
Lily Erb and
Alexis Neal took three shots each.
Â
In goal,
Katelyn Chrisman got the start and made two saves.
Â
ASU took five shots over the first 11 minutes of the match while TXST had only one. The momentum swung to the Bobcats when they were awards a free kick near midfield in the 18th minute.
Kennley Bradley sent the free kick into the box that saw a Red Wolf defender head the ball and Damaris Deschaine had to leap and bat the ball off the line. A charging
Kaylie Smith was able to beat Deschaine to the loose ball and blasted a right-footed shot into the back of the net for her first collegiate goal.
Â
The advantage was short lived as ASU took advantage of a corner kick just over six minutes later. A headed ball found its way to Emma Riales, who's shot attempt at the right post was cleared off the line by a Bobcat. However, Emma Riley was there to put the rebound into the back of the net to tie the match.
Â
Midway through the 41st minute, a free kick for the Red Wolves was sent into the box. Chrisman leapt for the ball but was hit in the air by an ASU player to cause the ball to hit off her fingertips. Keelyn Peacock would then knock the ball in to put the visitors up 2-1.
Â
Bassa nearly tied the match when she was able to flick a ball from outside the penalty area towards the goal in the 65th minute. The ball hit off the bottom of the crossbar but bounced back into play.
Â
The freshman would draw a penalty just over a minute later when Riley Whisenhunt crashed into her after the Lumberton, Texas native had headed the ball towards the right post. Bassa stepped up and converted her third penalty kick of the season to tie the contest at 2-2.
Â
With her three made penalty kicks, the freshman forward moved into a tie for the second most in a single season in program history with Kaylee Davis' 2019 total. The program mark is four set by
Madi Goss in 2022.
Â
Texas State would have a couple more chances to take the lead but saw Deschaine stop all the attempts. The first came in the 70th minute when a back heel attempt by Bassa was dove on.
Annabelle Fisher nearly had her first career goal in the 85th minute when her bending shot towards the left post was pushed away at the last second.
Â
Next up for the Bobcats is a trip to Troy on Thursday, Oct. 10 for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
