SAN MARCOS, Texas – Trailing by two at halftime, Texas State (2-3-0) was able to tie the match up eight minutes into the second half. However, Houston (3-2-1) would find the back of the net once in the period to leave the Bobcat Soccer Complex with a 3-2 win on Sunday.
Â
Finding the back of the net for the Bobcats was
Victoria Meza and
Mady Soumare. For Meza, it was her first goal of the season and fourth in her career. Soumare's tally was her Sun Belt Conference leading fourth of the season.
Â
The Cougars held a 15-11 advantage in shots but TXST put six attempts on frame to just four for the visitors. Meza took a team-high four shots with two of them being on frame. Soumare saw all three of her shot attempts be on goal. Also taking multiple shots for Texas State was
Zoe Junior with two.
Â
Between the posts,
Katelyn Chrisman made the start and recorded one save on the night.
Â
Early in the 12th minute,
Mya Ulloa sent a short pass into the box for Soumare to run onto. She hit the ball first time but saw the charging keeper make a diving save to keep the match scoreless.
Â
UH struck first late during the 14th minute when Aryanna Jimison found Juliet Moore for a goal. Moore would add her second tally of the match a little over five minutes later to put the visitors up 2-0.
Â
After making adjustments at halftime, the Bobcats were able to put more pressure on the Cougars' defense. The visitors committed a foul that saw Kaylee Smith send the free kick where Meza headed it into the bottom corner of the goal to cut the deficit in half in the 51st minute.
Â
Two and a half minutes later,
Zoe Junior threw the ball in to Soumare. The junior forward battled past two defenders and sent a lower left-footed shot just inside the near post to tie the match at 2-2.
Â
Soumare nearly put the Bobcats in front early in the 57th minute. Junior sent a ball into the box that saw Soumare get behind the defense for a possible one-on-one opportunity with the keeper but she misplayed the ball and saw it go wide of frame for a goal kick.
Â
Both
Chloe Jones and Soumare would put shots on target in the 59th minute that were both stopped by the UH goalkeeper.
Â
The Cougars would get the eventual match-winning goal late in the 60th minute when Kayla Smith sent a cross in from the right flank. Moore was there to knock it into the back of the net to record a hat-trick on the evening.
Â
With a minute left on the clock, Smith sent another free kick into the 18-yard box that found the head of Meza. This time the sophomore was not able to get enough power on her attempt as it easily bounced into the keeper's hands.
Â
The last opportunity for the Bobcats came with four seconds left to play.
Annabelle Fisher sent a low cross in from the right side. Junior beat her defender and was able to get her right-foot on the ball for a shot attempt. The ball rolled just wide of the left post and out of play.
