WACO, Texas – After missing the first seven matches of Texas State's season while competing for Ghana in the U-20 Women's World Cup,
Helen Alormenu made an instant impact in her collegiate debut. The freshman scored the match-tying goal with 11 seconds remaining of Sunday night's 2-2 draw at Baylor from Betty Lou Mays Field that saw kickoff delayed two and a half hours due to weather.
Â
"This was a really good game tonight. Our girls took the weather delay in stride and played really well throughout," said head coach
Steve Holeman. "I'm proud of our effort and commitment to play until the final whistle. This is one more positive step in our preparation for the Sun Belt."
Â
For the night, TXST took 18 shots with nine attempts being on frame. Both
Helen Alormenu and
Victoria Meza took a team-high four shots with Meza putting in three on goal and Alormenu placing two on target.
Â
Caitlyn Draper made 10 saves on the evening. It was her third career contest with double-digit saves to tie for the most 10-plus save contests in program history.
Â
The first good opportunity for Texas State came late in the ninth minute.
Mya Ulloa sent in a corner kick that Meza headed between the wickets of a teammate and a defender but the Bear goalkeeper was there to smoother the ball.
Â
Alexis Neal had two good looks in the opening stanza. The first was in the 39th minute when she took a hard rip from 15 yards out that went directly to the keeper. With just over two minutes left on the clock, she got behind the defense and sent a shot towards the back post the went slightly wide.
Â
The first 45 minutes saw Draper come up with four saves. The biggest came with five minutes to go until halftime when a deflected ball landed at the feet of Salma Simonin. Her attempt on frame saw the sophomore keeper make a diving save to keep the contest scoreless.
Â
Over the first six minutes of the second half, Baylor peppered the Bobcats' goal with six shots with only two being on frame that were both stopped by Draper.
Â
Soumare pounced on a loose ball in the offensive third and sent a pass to an open Meza. The sophomore midfielder sent a shot off the left post and into the back of the net to put TXST up 1-0 early in the 54th minute.
Â
Two minutes later, Tyler Isgrig hit a curling shot into the upper right corner to tie the match 1-1.
Â
Kai Hayes got behind the Texas State backline on a long ball and headed the ball into the net to put the hosts in front by a goal midway through the 71st minute.
Â
With 51 seconds left on the clock, the Bears were called for a foul in the Bobcats' offensive third of the field.
Kaylie Smith sent the free kick into the box that saw a defender head the ball out of the 18-yard box. Ulloa was there to immediately put the ball back in and found Alormenu. The Ghanan settled the ball, turned and put a floating shot into the back corner to tie the match.
Â
Next up for the Bobcats is a trip to the Pelican State to face McNeese at 7 pm on Thursday in the final non-conference match of the season.
