LAKE CHARLES, La. – Texas State (4-3-2) wrapped up non-conference play Thursday night with a 2-1 win over McNeese (3-6-0) at Cowgirl Field. The victory extended the Bobcats unbeaten streak to four matches with all being on the road.
Â
"Really glad to get the result tonight. This was a completely different challenge for us as we haven't seen a low block quite like this before," said head coach
Steve Holeman. "We created some quality chances, and it was nice to see such a fantastic serve from Anna that ended with a first-class finish from Helen for the winner. Overall, we had a very good non-conference run and we feel confident it has prepared us for the Sun Belt."
Â
Finding the back of the net on the night was
Helen Alormenu and
Mady Soumare. The match-winner was scored by Alormenu with it being her second goal in as many career matches. For Soumare, it was her team leading fifth tally of the season.
Â
TXST outshot the Cowgirls 33-2 and held an 18-1 advantage in shots on goal. The 18 shots on target are tied for the third most in a match in program history and most ever in a road contest. The SOG mark is also the most by the team since placing 18 on frame against Prairie View A&M exactly 10 years ago.
Â
Alormenu led the way with seven shot attempts off the bench with three being on goal.
Victoria Meza took four shots while the trio of
Sydney Bassa,
Zoe Junior and
Alexis Neal had three attempts apiece.
Â
It was a dominant first half for the Bobcats. They outshot the Cowgirls 14-0 and placed eight attempts on frame. TXST also saw 11 different players attempt a shot in the first 45 minutes.
Â
Zoe Junior was able to beat a defender to the ball and toe poke it into open space down the right side. Running onto the ball was
Mady Soumare, who beat one defender to get into the box. The Parisian sent a low shot past the keeper and off the far post early in the 25th minute to give TXST a 1-0 lead.
Â
A two-and-a-half-minute span saw the Bobcats put three good shots on frame but the Cowgirl goalkeeper came up with big stops each time. Those missed opportunities would come back to bite TXST as Grace Denison slotted a shot into the back of the net to tie the match nearly 14 minutes into the second half.
Â
Texas State controlled the ball for nearly the rest of the match. The pressure finally paid off in the 78th minute when
Anna Dunch sent a ball into the box. Alormenu was there to head the ball to the left corner of the net to put the Bobcats back in front.
Â
Next up for TXST is the Sun Belt Conference opener on Sunday at Louisiana. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. in the final contest of a five-match road swing.
