Soumare’s Brace Leads Bobcats to 4-0 Victory

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Junior forward Mady Soumare scored twice Sunday night for her first career brace in a Texas State uniform as the Bobcats went on to defeat Incarnate Word 4-0. The victory extended TXST's home undefeated streak to eight matches.

With the win, the Bobcats improved to 2-1-0 while the Cardinals dropped to 1-2-1.

"I think we had a complete game from start to finish. It was really good to see how our press worked against their possession," said head coach Steve Holeman. "Incarnate Word is a much improved team that does a really good job of keeping the ball. We did a good job of disrupting that."

Also scoring on the night was Sydney Bassa and Zoe Junior. It was the first goals of the season for the both of them. Junior also finished with career-high two assists with both coming on Soumare's tallies.

Texas State outshot UIW 22-8 and led 10-5 in shots in goal. Alexis Neal led the team with four attempts while coming off the bench. The trio of Bassa, Junior and Soumare took three shots apiece with both Junior and Soumare putting two on frame.

In goal, Caitlyn Draper made four saves over the first 71 minutes. Katelyn Chrisman played the final 19 minutes and stopped the lone shot on frame she faced from the visitors.

Soumare nearly found the back of the just over a minute into the match. She stole a pass and got past the sliding goalkeeper but miss hit the shot into the left side netting.

The Parisian would take advantage of a long ball in by Anna Dunch that hit off a Cardinal defender. She would slot a shot low past the keeper for her second goal of the year.

Late in the 19th minute, Junior picked off a misplayed pass by UIW just over the midfield line. The Frisco, Texas native avoided one defender and used her speed to get into the box. Her initial shot was blocked but she quickly recovered and hit a curling shot into the lower right corner to put the Bobcats ahead 2-0.

UIW had a chance to cut the deficit in half late in the 59th minute when the Bobcats were called for a hand ball. Alex Knutson sent the spot kick towards the right post that saw Draper guess correctly. The ball was out of reach of the sophomore goalkeeper but it clanked off the inside of the post and back into play where it was cleared away by Kennley Bradley.

Draper would come up big in the 66th minute as she stopped a shot by Brianna Mata that deflected off the crossbar. She quickly recovered to knock away a shot by Peri Olmo off the rebound to keep the shutout in tack.

Junior would shield a ball in the box that was headed down by a UIW defender in the box. She placed a pass to Soumare, who hit it first time into the upper right corner for her second goal of the night and third of the season.

Early in the 72nd minute, Chrisman came into the match for Draper and 33 seconds later made a charging save on Meredith Caviglia after a give-and-go run.

The final tally of the match came in the 85th minute. The Cardinals were called for a hand ball offense in the box to give the Bobcats a penalty kick off a shot attempt by Bassa. The freshman stepped up and calmly put the ball into the back of the net as the keeper went the other way.

Next up for TXST is a first-ever meeting with Colorado State on Thursday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. from the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
