Shipley Named to Lou Groza Award Watch List

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Texas State saw another preseason accolade come in as Mason Shipley has been named to the Lou Groza Award Watch List on Friday, as announced by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission.

Shipley was one of two placekickers in the nation to finish with a 100% field goal percentage as he went 15-for-15 last year. The redshirt junior's field goal total was the most in a campaign in program history.

He finished scoring 103 points after going 58-for-59 on extra-points, which is the second highest total in team history behind David Morrison's 114 points in 1967.

Shipley is one of 30 kickers on the watch list and one of two from the Sun Belt Conference (App State's Michael Hughes).

The 33rd Annual Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award, presented by the Orange Bowl, recognizes three finalists during a celebration in Palm Beach County, culminating with a gala awards banquet on December 9 in West Palm Beach, Florida.

The award is named for National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou "The Toe" Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954. Although an All-Pro offensive lineman as well, Groza ushered in the notion that there should be a place on an NFL roster for a kicker.
