HUNTINGTON, W. VA. – Texas State scored all its runs with two outs on the way to claiming a 7-4 victory Sunday afternoon in the series finale against Marshall at Jack Cook Field.
Â
The Bobcats improved to 16-16 on the season and 5-7 in the Sun Belt Conference while the Thundering Herd drop to 11-19 overall and are also 5-7 in conference play.
Â
Earning the win on the mound was
Tony Robie (3-2) as he threw two scoreless innings with one strikeout. Nicholas Weyrich (0-3) was credited with the loss after giving up three runs on five hits and two walks in 2.1 innings.
Â
Drayton Brown went five innings to start the contest with a season-high tying six strikeouts while surrendering just four hits and one unearned run.
Jonathan Martinez struck out two in 1.1 innings of relief and
Matthew Tippie recorded two outs without giving up a run.
Â
Five TXST players had multiple hits on the day led by three from
Aaron Lugo, who also scored twice and drove in two. Finishing with two hits apiece was
Ian Collier,
Ethan Farris,
Davis Powell and
August Ramirez. Scoring two times was Collier while
Chase Mora also had a two RBI day.
Â
A throwing error that went into the netting around the field allowed Marshall to score the first run of the game its first time at the plate.
Â
Lugo started off the fourth with a double to right center and he would advance to third on a ground out. However, he would be stranded 90 feet from home as the frame ended.
Â
The Bobcats would get on the scoreboard on the fifth. Collier doubled down the left field line off the third base bag and he would score on a Powell single to left to tie the game.
Â
In the bottom of the sixth, the Herd strung together three straight hits plus a TXST error allowed them to score twice to go back in front 3-1.
Â
Both Collier and Powell were hit in back-to-back plate appearances in the seventh and they both moved into scoring position on a slow groundout. Lugo sent a 0-1 pitch through the right side of the infield to bring home both runners to tie the game. After
Daylan Pena singled to right to put runners on the corners, Ramirez beat the shift with a hot shot through the left side of the infield to give Texas State a 4-3 advantage.
Â
Marshall answered back in the bottom of the inning with a run to tie the contest.
Â
Kameron Weil started the ninth off with an infield single off the end of his bat. Lugo followed with a push bunt down the first baseline that he beat out for a base knock as the second baseman was late to cover the bag. After a groundout moved both runners into scoring position, Ramirez was intentionally walked to load the bases.
Â
Weyrich was able to induce Farris into a short popup to the second baseman. Facing a 2-2 count,
Alec Patino was able to hold off on the next two pitches to draw a free pass and bring in the go-ahead run. Mora would then send a 2-1 offering to center that drove in the final two runs of the game.
Â
In the bottom of the inning, Mora made a diving catch on a ball hit back up the middle to prevent a base hit and record the second out of the frame. Robie would get Vogelsong swinging to end the game and snap the Bobcats' six-game losing streak.
Â
Next up for TXST is two midweek games against Texas. The first will take place Tuesday in San Marcos with a 6 p.m. first pitch.
