HUNTINGTON, W. VA. – On a cold Friday night, Texas State fell 7-1 to Marshall at Jack Cook Field in the series opener.
Â
With the result, the Bobcats are now 15-15 on the season and 4-6 in the Sun Belt Conference while the Thundering Herd are 10-18 overall and also 4-6 in league play.
Â
Ausitn Eaton (2-3) took the loss after giving up four runs on six hits and two walks in 3.2 innings. A quality start by Drew Harlow (5-3) of one run on four hits and six strikeouts in seven innings earned him the victory.
Â
Tossing two frames out of the bullpen was
Cameron Bush.
Otto Wofford saw the only out he recorded come via a strikeout and
Taylor Seay had two punch outs in his inning of relief.
Â
Kameron Weil paced TXST with two base hits on the evening. Both
Daylan Pena and
August Ramirez had a base knock apiece with Ramirez's being a double.
Â
Marshall struck first with a solo home run in the first off the bat of Owen Ayers. It would tack on a run in each of the next three innings to lead 4-0 after four frames.
Â
Ramirez started the fifth off with a double to right center and he would move to within 90 feet of scoring on a groundout. A pitch got away from the catcher but ricocheted enough off the backstop to allow him to attempt a throw back to the pitcher covering the plate. The throw was wild and allowed Ramirez to score despite stopping halfway down the line to put the Bobcats on the scoreboard.
Â
A double just out of the reach of Lugo down the third baseline put the Herd back up by four and then a passed ball made it a five-run advantage for the hosts after six complete. Another run was scored by Marshall in the eighth for the final run of the night.
Â
Game two of the series is scheduled for a 2 p.m. CT first pitch.
