Brown Deals and 4th Inning Hit Parade Leads Bobcats Saturday Victory

JONESBORO, Ark. – A complete game shutout by Drayton Brown and an eight-run, nine-hit fourth inning propelled Texas State to a 10-0 run-rule victory in seven innings Saturday afternoon over Arkansas State at Tomlinson Stadium.

Brown is the first Bobcat to go the distance in a game without allowing a run since Zachary Leigh did so on Apr. 1, 2021 against UT Arlington at Bobcat Ballpark. Against the Red Wolves, the Northwestern State transfer struck out four while allowing just four hits and one walk to improve to 1-3 on the year.

With the victory, TXST is now 22-23 overall and 8-13 in the Sun Belt Conference while ASU drops to 19-24-1 on the year and 6-13-1 in league action.

Finishing with two hits and two RBI was Aaron Lugo. Also driving in two runs was Chase Mora and Daylan Pena while recording two base knocks was Ryne Farber, Alex Gonzales and Davis Powell. Coming around to score twice was Kameron Weil and Farber.

Weil started off the game by being walks. After moving up to second on a slow chopper to third, he was ablet to induce the pitcher into a balk to advance to third. A seeing-eye single back up the middle by Lugo brought the senior outfielder home for the early lead.

The fourth inning began with Pena doubling to right field and Powell sending a single back up the middle and advancing to second on a throw home. Alec Patino grounded out to second base to bring home the first run of the frame. The next six Bobcats all singled that brought in five more runs.

After Farber stole third, Pena hit a sacrifice fly to right and the final run of the game was courtesy of Lugo as he scored on Powell's triple to left center.

Pena recorded his second sac fly of the game in the sixth that saw Farber score to make it a 10-0 lead.

The Red Wolves threatened in the seventh to extend the game that saw Cason Tollett reach on an infield single. Two batters later, Cade Tucker singled to right to put two runners on base for the first time in the contest. Brown was able to induce a fly out and then a ground out to Patino to end the game.

Next up for the Bobcats is an I-35 rivalry game against UTSA on Tuesday. The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. in San Antonio.
