JONESBORO, Ark. – Friday's doubleheader saw two one-run contests but both went against Texas State as Arkansas State claimed the first game 5-4 and the night cap 8-7 in 10 innings at Tomlinson Stadium.
Â
The losses drop the Bobcats to 21-23 on the season and 7-13 in the Sun Belt Conference while the Red Wolves are now 19-23-1 overall and 6-13-1 in league play.
Â
Game 1
On the mound,
Austin Eaton (3-4) struck out three but surrendered three runs in 3.2 innings on six hits to take the loss. Arlon Butts (2-1) allowed a run on two base knocks in two innings to pick up the win while Blaine Harpenau threw two scoreless frames to earn his second save.
Â
Cameron Bush started and went three innings with two runs allowed on five hits.
Jonathan Martinez worked the final 1.1 innings.
Â
Seven different TXST batters had a hit on the afternoon with all of them being singles.
Daylan Pena drove in two runs while a run apiece was plated by
Davis Powell and
August Ramirez.
Â
The Bobcats would jump out to an early lead with a two-run first inning. Driving in a run apiece was Pena and Ramirez with an RBI single each.
Â
It would be a short-lived advantage as the Red Wolves answered back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. The hosts threatened to score more as they loaded the bases but a lineout back to Bush saw him double up the runner on third to conclude the frame.
Â
ASU nearly got on the scoreboard in the fourth when it loaded the bases on a single, hit by pitch and throwing error. Eaton was able to induce a fly out to
Kameron Weil to escape without allowing a run and keeping the score tied.
Â
Ryne Farber and
Aaron Lugo had back-to-back singles to start off the sixth to put runners on the corners. Pena hit a sac fly to right field to put the Bobcats back in front. A single back up the middle courtesy of
Davis Powell later in the frame increased the lead to 4-2.
Â
The Red Wolves would respond with a run in the next half inning to cut TXST's advantage to a run. The hosts would score twice in the next inning with two outs to take a 5-4 lead.
Â
In the ninth, Powell reached base on a throwing error by his counterpart and
Kameron Weil drew a walk with two gone. Mora would send a hard shot down the first base line but it was grabbed by the ASU first baseman, who stepped on the bag to end the game.
Â
Game 2
Sam Hall threw a gem out of the bullpen as he struck out a career-high nine over 5.2 innings. However, he surrendered the game-winning run to drop to 1-5 on the season. Jake Henry Williams (2-1) threw two scoreless innings of relief to earn the win.
Â
Making his first career weekend start was
Rhett McCaffety, who struck out five in two innings but allowed four runs, two of them earned, on five hits. Both
Tony Robie and
Taylor Seay thew an inning of relief.
Â
Both Mora and Weil had three hits on the night with Mora driving in three runs. Farber was 2-for-4 and scored twice. Driving in two runs apiece was
Rashawn Galloway and Pena.
Â
It would be the Red Wolves that got on the scoreboard first as a Texas State error allowed the hosts to score once in the first. The hosts would add to their lead in the third with a five-run frame that was aided by three Bobcat errors.
Â
Farber led off the fourth with a double down in the left field line. Lugo followed with a single down the right field line to put runners on the corners as Farber had to hold up to make sure the ball wasn't caught. The freshman would cross the plate on a slow chopper off the bat of Pena to put TXST on the scoreboard.
Â
The deficit would grow back to six as ASU got a sacrifice fly in the next half inning.
Â
Ethan Farris reached base as a dribbler was picked up by the pitcher but the ball slipped out of his hand as he went to throw it. Weil followed with a single through the left side and Mora drove both guys home with a double to the left centerfield gap.
Â
The bases would be loaded when Farber was hit by a pitch and Lugo was walked. A slow grounder off the bat of Pena resulted in a ground out to the shortstop but brought in a run. The first pitch to Galloway was sent to through the right side for a two RBI single that cut the deficit to 7-6.
Â
Alec Patino came on as a pinch hitter to start off the ninth and worked a walk. A bunt was put down by Weil that was fielded by the Red Wolves' third baseman. Instead of going to first for the out, he threw to an uncovered second base that put runners on the corners. Mora followed with an RBI single to left to tie the game.
Â
Texas State was able to load the bases with no outs but a pop up and double play got the hosts out of the jam.
Â
In the bottom of the 10, Blake Burris hit a hot shot for an infield single and would reach third on Cason Tollett's single to center. Jared Toler ended the game with a single to right.
Â
The series is scheduled to conclude on Saturday with a 3 p.m. first pitch.
