Bobcats Fall to Jaguars in Season Finale

SAN MARCOS, Texas – A low-scoring affair in Sunday's series finale saw Texas State fall 3-1 to South Alabama at Bobcat Ballpark.

The result drops the Bobcats to 20-21 overall and 7-11 in the Sun Belt Conference while the Jaguars are now 23-17 on the season and 8-10 in league play.

Drayton Brown (0-3) went 5.2 innings with four strikeouts but allowed three runs, two of them earned, on four hits and walks to take the loss. John Michael Gillis (2-0) went five innings to pick up the win and Grant Wood worked the ninth to earn his eighth save of the year.

In relief, Rhett McCaffety tossed 2.1 scoreless innings with two strikeouts while Jonathan Martinez held the visitors off the scoreboard in his lone inning of work.

Both Ryne Farber and Chase Mora went 2-for-4 at the plate with one of Mora's hits being a double. Farber scored TXST's only run of the game while Daylan Pena recorded an RBI.

With two outs in the first, Farber sent the first pitch he saw back up the middle for a single. Pena then hit a hot shot down the third base line for a double that saw the freshman score all the way from first for the early 1-0 Bobcat lead.

Pena's RBI was the 117th of his career to tie him for ninth on the program's career list with former teammate Dalton Shuffield.

South Alabama had two on with one out in the third when Lucas Ismaili hit a ground ball back up the middle. It was fumbled by Mora to load the bases. A slow hit grounder by Micah Morgan was fielded by Ethan Farris with his only play being at first that allowed the tying run to score.

The Jaguars added to their lead with a solo homer by Ismaili in the fifth.

In the bottom of the frame, Farris led off with a single and moved into scoring position on a Davis Powell sacrifice bunt. Weil would later work a free pass to put two on with two outs for Farber. The San Antonio native got a hold of a 3-1 offering but the wind had picked up at the inopportune time as the ball was knocked down and caught on the warning track to deny a go-ahead home run.

USA got a second solo round tripper in the sixth, this time off the bat of Morgan down the left field line.

Mora began the ninth by sending a 3-2 pitch through the right side for a single. He was traded on base for Rashawn Galloway, who beat out a grounder for a fielder's choice. Powell was able to pop a 2-2 offering over the infield to left field for a single to the tying run on base.

The first pitch to Lugo was a hanging slider that he pulled just foul down the left field line to just miss  hitting a walk-off home run. The junior would send a 3-2 pitch back up the middle but the Jaguar's shortstop was able to get to the ball and throw him out at first to end the game.

The four-game homestand for Texas State concludes on Tuesday when it hosts Incarnate Word. The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
