WBB Adds Bucknell Transfer Blake Matthews

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State women's basketball head coach Zenarae Antoine announced the addition of Bucknell University transfer Blake Matthews on Friday.

Matthews, a Houston native, returns to Texas after two seasons with Bucknell University in the Patriot League. Last season at Bucknell she played in all 30 games with 24 starts. In her career she's averaged 6.6 points, 3.9 rebounds and three assists per game. She's had seven double-digit nights including a stretch of four-straight games in four of the team's last five games of the 2023-24 season.

"Blake is a 'lightning bolt' on the floor," Antoine said. "She has the ability to play fast and make others around her shine. Not only does she enhance her teammates on the floor, off the floor, her magnetic personality is delightful for all that have the opportunity to encounter her."

Prior to her time at Bucknell, Matthews excelled in her high school career as a four-year letter in basketball while serving as team captain and two letters in tennis as well. She was named to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches 3-6A All-Region Team. She was also the 2020-21 Atascocita team MBP and three-time District 22-6A First Team All-District. She finished her high school career with over 1,200 points, 600 rebounds and 475 assists.

In addition to her on court success, Matthews was a four-time Academic All-District honoree for her work in the classroom.

"We are happy that Blake chose Texas State University as her home," Antoine said. "She embodies our values and the discipline that it takes to win."

Matthews is the first transfer to join the Bobcats ahead of the 2024-25 season, totaling a group of five incoming players for next season. She is joined by four freshmen, Saniya Burks, Heather Baymon, Takeira Ramey, and Melinda Winston.

What they're saying about Matthews:
Director of Cy Fair Premier Coach Chris Johnson: "I'm excited for Blake to continue her career at Texas State. She is a true PG who wants to win and will automatically step into a leadership role. Her work ethic and character will be contagious among her peers."

Former Atascocita HS Basketball Coach Veronica Johnson: "I am beyond excited to see Blake coming back home to Texas to finish her basketball career. Blake is one of the most determined and most talented players that I have had the pleasure of coaching. Her passion for the game will make an immediate impact on her new Bobcat family and there is no doubt in my mind that she will do a phenomenal job leading her teammates on and off the court at Texas State. She is a pure leader, and I can't wait to see her help lead the Bobcats to a Sunbelt Championship!"
