Ninth Inning Rally Falls a Run Short

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State scored twice in the ninth but fell a run shy of defeating Louisiana Saturday afternoon a Bobcat Ballpark. The Ragin' Cajuns ended up taking the series finale 7-6.

With the result, the Bobcats drop to 15-13 overall and 4-5 in the Sun Belt Conference while Louisiana is now 20-8 on the year and 8-1 in league play.

"It was a battle. We had a lot of opportunities that we left out there. It tends to happen when it comes down to one swing in the ninth, but people forget about the second, third or fifth inning when you have bases loaded or guys on second and third," said head coach Steven Trout. "We just left a lot of plays out there. The loss was disappointing and while we were competitive, we are not getting it done."

Matthew Tippie (2-1) threw 2.1 innings out of the bullpen but surrendered four runs on three walks and two hits to take the loss. Matthew Holzhammer (3-0) tossed 3.1 scoreless innings to claim the win and LP Langevin threw the ninth to earn his third save of the season.

Stifling the Cajun offense for the first 4.1 frames was Drayton Brown. The right-hander struck out three while giving up two runs on four hits. Both Jonathan Martinez and Tony Robie worked an inning of relief with one strikeout.

August Ramirez finished the day 2-for-3 with three RBI, two walks and one run scored. Also finishing with two hits were Rashawn Galloway, Aaron Lugo, Alec Patino, Daylan Pena and Kameron Weil. Driving in a run each was Galloway, Patino and Weil.

The first run of the game was scored by TXST in the first when Patino singled through the right side that allowed Weil to score from second. Another run would be plated in the second as Weil hit an infield single in the second with the bases loaded to increase the advantage to 2-0.

In the fourth, the Cajuns scored twice to tie the game. The Bobcats answered back in the bottom of the frame when Ramirez sent a 1-0 pitch through the right side for a two RBI single.

Texas State had a chance to break the game open in the seventh. Lugo doubled to center field and walks to Galloway and Ramirez loaded the bases. However, a groundout ended the opportunity.

Louisiana would take advantage with a five-run eighth to go up 7-4.

Lugo was able to work a free pass and Pena singled to right field with one out in the ninth. Ramirez came through again with a single through the right side of the infield to drive in the junior third baseman. Galloway would send a 0-1 pitch to center for an RBI single that cut the deficit to a run. Back-to-back popups would end the Bobcats' comeback attempt and the game.

TXST is back in action at Bobcat Ballpark on Tuesday when nationally ranked Texas A&M comes to town with the first pitch slated for 6 p.m.
