SAN MARCOS, Texas – A low-scoring affair did not go Texas State's way as Louisiana took the series opener 4-1 Thursday night at Bobcat Ballpark.
With the result, the Bobcats are now 15-11 on the year and 4-3 in the Sun Belt Conference while the Ragin' Cajuns improved to 18-8 overall and 6-1 in league action.
"It was a typical Friday night game on a Thursday. Eaton threw the ball well and gave us a chance to win the game. Their guy was good as well and we barreled him up at times," said head coach Steven Trout. "Obviously, we let him off the hook in the first as we had a chance to score. The key today was we scored first but they came back with the solo home run and then scored two to take the momentum and kept building on it.
Austin Eaton (2-2) took the loss after giving up three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out three in 5.2 innings. Andrew Herrmann (2-1) struck out three in 5.2 frames and gave up just one run to pick up the win. Earning his second save of the year was LP Langevin after throwing 3.1 scoreless innings with six strikeouts.
The trio of Jonathan Martinez, Rhett McCaffety and Peyton Zabel all threw an inning out of the bullpen. Zabel struck out two and McCaffety recorded one strikeout. The lone out recorded by Otto Wofford was a punch out.
Recording a hit on the night was Rashawn Galloway, Aaron Lugo, Alec Patino, Daylan Pena and Kameron Weil. Both Pena's and Weil's base knocks went for extra bases with a double and triple, respectively.
Weil led off the bottom of the first with a triple off the right field wall. However, the next three TXST batters would get set down in order on five pitches.
The visitors threatened in the top of the fourth by loading the bases with one out. Eaton was able to induce a double play to escape the jam unharmed.
In the next half inning, Lugo sent a 1-2 pitch back up the middle for a single with two gone. He would move into scoring position as a pickoff attempted sailed high of the first baseman. Pena cranked a 1-0 offering to left center for an RBI double to put Texas State up 1-0.
Louisiana answered back in the fifth as Connor Higgs started the inning with a solo home run down the left field line. The Cajuns would score twice more in the sixth with one run coming home on a double and another on a fielding error. They would score the final run of the game in the ninth on a successful suicide squeeze.
Game two of the series is scheduled for a 6 p.m. first pitch on Friday.
