Early Offense Propels Bobcats Past Vaqueros

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Eleven runs scored over the first three innings helped Texas State (15-10) go on and win its third consecutive midweek game with a 12-6 victory over UTRGV (12-11) Tuesday night at Bobcat Ballpark.

While only recording seven hits as a team, the Bobcats also drew 11 walks and were plunked twice. Every TXST batter was walked at least once with two free passes being worked by Rashawn Galloway, Alex Gonzales and August Ramirez.

Alec Patino was the lone batter with multiple hits as the senior went 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs and one double. Daylan Pena drove in two runs and both he and Davis Powell hit a double apiece. Scoring twice was Aaron Lugo, Gonzales, Patino and Powell.

Earning the win on the mound was Otto Wofford (2-0) after he worked a scoreless inning of relief. Wyatt Wiatrek (0-1) took the loss as he gave up five runs on four walks and one hit while recording just one out in the first inning.

Tony Robie started and went four innings with four strikeouts but surrendered four runs on six hits. Working an inning out of the bullpen was Dalton Buckingham, Colby Diaz and Jonathan Martinez. Also seeing action was Nicholas Holbrook, Rhett McCaffety and Taylor Seay.

After Kameron Weil grounded out to start the bottom of the first, Powell doubled down the right field line. Four consecutive walks and a wild pitch brought home Texas State's first two runs of the game. Following a pitching change, Chase Mora was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to plate a run. Galloway followed with an RBI single through the left side to bring in the fourth run of the inning.

Ramirez would score on a wild pitch and Gonzales flew out to centerfield for a sacrifice fly that brought in the sixth and final run of the opening frame.

With one out in the second, Lugo singled back up the middle and would move into scoring position on a ground out back to the pitcher. Back-to-back wild pitches allowed the junior third baseman to score and increase the lead to 7-0.

Two walks and Powell getting plunked loaded the bases in the third. Patino smacked a double to left center that plated two runs. Two batters later, Pena also doubled to left center that brought home two runs to make it an 11-run advantage.

The Vaqueros started the fifth with three consecutive singles and then a double to bring in two runs. Back-to-back free passes plated a third run and a double play allowed the fourth run of the inning to score.

With two outs in the top of the seventh, UTRGV was able to work two walks to load the bases. The next two batters would be plunked to bring in a run each and cut the visitor's deficit to five.

A sac fly off the bat of Patino in the next half inning would bring in the final run of the game for either team.

Next up for the Bobcats is a big Sun Belt Conference series against Louisiana. The first pitch from Bobcat Ballpark is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Thursday.
