HARRISONBURG, Va. – Texas State's late comeback attempt fell short in the series finale on a cold Sunday afternoon from Veteran Memorial Park as James Madison took the contest 7-5.
Â
With the result, the Bobcats are now 14-10 overall and 4-2 in the Sun Belt Conference while the Dukes are also 14-10 but 2-4 in league play.
Â
Drayton Brown (0-2) took the loss after he gave up three runs, all unearned, in two innings as he walked three and gave up one hit. Picking up the win was Donovan Burke (2-0) as the lefty threw 6.2 innings with 10 strikeouts while giving up five runs on seven hits.
Â
Out of the bullpen,
Cameron Bush went 3.1 innings with one strikeout with three runs allowed.
Matthew Tippie tossed 1.1 innings with a strikeout. Both of
Jonathan Martinez's outs were via a punch out and both
Rhett McCaffety and
Otto Wofford retired a batter apiece.
Â
Finishing with two hits apiece were
Rashawn Galloway,
Aaron Lugo,
Daylan Pena and
Kameron Weil. Lugo drove in three runs and had the team's lone extra-base hit of the contest, a double. Also driving in one run was Weil.
Â
A couple of miscues by the Bobcats along with two walks led to the Dukes scoring three runs in the first while not recording a hit.
Â
In both the third and fourth innings, TXST got two runners on base with two outs but both would be left stranded.
Â
JMU tacked on two more in the fourth on a single through the right side by Fenwick Trimble to increase its advantage to 5-0.
Â
Lugo battled and eventually singled back up the middle with two gone in the sixth. Pena followed with a single to center that saw the outfielder misplay the ball as it rolled all the way to the wall. This allowed Lugo to score all the way from first to put Texas State on the scoreboard.
Â
The Dukes would immediately go back up by five as Jason Schiavone led off the bottom of the frame with a solo home run to right center. The hosts would add another run to go up by six.
Â
Walks to
Chase Mora and Galloway started off the seventh.
Alex Gonzales laid down a bunt that saw the JMU catcher throw to third but his throw was late that loaded the bases. Weil sent a single through the left side to bring home a run. After the next two batters struck out, Lugo hit a bases clearing double off the right field wall to cut the deficit to 7-5.
Â
TXST was able to get two on base on consecutive singles by Mora and Galloway, but a pop up and ground out stifled the team's chance of scoring.
Â
Next for the Bobcats is a meeting with UTRGV on Tuesday at Bobcat Ballpark with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.
