Comeback Falls Short Sunday Afternoon

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State was able to bring the winning run to the plate in the ninth inning but were unable to complete the comeback Sunday afternoon as Sam Houston took the series finale 3-1 at Bobcat Ballpark.

"I thought Drayton Brown did a great job throwing the baseball with the exception of the home run. Also saw some different guys out of the bullpen and what we need to continue to work on," said head coach Steven Trout. "Our offense approach was terrible from the get-go, and we didn't really make them work as we had 13 flyouts. It was a disappointing week and weekend. We got to find a way to turn it around with a big week ahead of us with two midweeks and then the start of conference play."

The Bobcats drop to 7-8 on the year while the Bearkats leave with an 11-5 record.

Alec Patino was the only Bobcat with multiple hits as he finished with two including a double. Aaron Lugo drove in the lone run of the game with a solo home run. Also finishing with a base knock was Ryne Farber, Daylan Pena and Davis Powell.

Brown (0-1) went five innings in his first start this season and struck out three but gave up two runs on five hits to take the loss. Gavi Coldiron (2-0) had four strikeouts in six shutout innings to pick up the win and Wyatt Tucker retired the final batter of the game to earn his second save.

Working a scoreless inning out of the bullpen was Jonathan Martinez, Taylor Seay and Matthew Tippie. Martinez recorded three strikeouts and Tippie posted two punch outs. Also seeing action was Tyler Cooper (0.1 IP) and Nicholas Holbrook (0.2 IP).

Sam Houston scored in the third when Walker Janek hit a two-run homer to left field.

In the bottom of the frame, Farber laid down a bunt for a single with two outs. Patino followed by sending a 3-2 offering to right center field. The ball hit the ground and unfortunately bounced over the wall for a ground-rule double that prevented Farber from easily scoring. A groundout ended TXST's threat.

The Bearkats added to their lead in the seventh with a run coming home on a wild pitch.

With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Lugo smacked a 1-1 pitch over the left centerfield wall for his team leading fifth round tripper of the season. August Ramirz then be walked on four pitches and Powell worked a five-pitch free pass to bring the potential winning run to the plate. After a pitching change, Tucker ended the game with a strikeout.

Next for the Bobcats is a trip up to Stephenville, Texas to take on Tarleton State on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
