STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Texas State (8-8) went on the road and defeated Tarleton State (10-8) 2-1 on Tuesday night at the Tarleton Baseball Complex. The victory snapped a five-game winless streak for the Bobcats.
Â
"Honestly, I'm happy to finally get a win tonight. We had some big pitches made with the bases loaded two or three times with no outs from
Otto Wofford and
Matthew Tippie," said head coach
Steven Trout. "Found just enough to scratch across out second run and held on for the road win. We are excited to take this momentum into tomorrow."
Â
At the plate,
Ryne Farber went 3-for-3 with a double and one RBI. Also finishing with two base knocks was
Aaron Lugo while
Alec Patino drove in a run.
Â
Matthew Tippie (2-0) earns the win as he threw three scoreless inning and struck out five. Reese Bassinger (0-1) gave up a run on one hit and walk to take the loss.
Â
Getting the start was
Cameron Bush as he scattered three hits over three frames. The trio of
Taylor Seay,
Jack Stroud and
Otto Wofford worked an inning apiece with two punch outs recorded by Wofford.
Â
The Bobcats were able to get runners on base but were unable push any runs across through the first five innings. They left one on in each of the first three innings before stranding two in the fourth and leaving the bases loaded in the fifth.
Â
In the second, the Texans were able to get two into scoring position but both were left stranded. After a leadoff single in the fifth, a failed pickoff attempt allowed Mason Hammonds to get all the way to third. A groundout, strikeout and fly out left him stranded and kept the game scoreless.
Â
Lugo started off the sixth with a single to left field and
Davis Powell was plunked to put the first two TXST batters on base. Following a
Samson Pugh sacrifice bunt, Lugo was thrown out at the plate on a grounder to the third baseman. Farber put an 0-2 pitch into play as he beat out the slow roller for an infielder single that plated Powell for the first run of the game.
Â
In the bottom of the frame, the home plate umpire said a pitch hit Cole Miears despite it hitting off the bat. A single put runners on the corners and then Trace Morrison beat out a bunt that tied brought in a run to tie the game. The hosts would load the bases with no outs, but Wofford struck out the next two batters and induced a fly out to end the threat.
Â
The hosts threatened to break the game open in the bottom of the seventh as they loaded the bases with no one out. Tippie came on and struck out the first batter he faced and then induced an inning ending double play to keep the game tied.
Â
A throwing error by the Texan third baseman allowed Pugh to reach base to start off the eighth. After
Kameron Weil laid down a sacrifice bunt, Farber was plunked and Mora hit a deep fly out to center that moved both runners into scoring position.
Â
Patino battled and hit a slow roller past the third baseman but it was fielded by the shortstop. His throw to first was late, which allowed Pugh to score and put the Bobcats up 2-1. Farber tried to score as the ball was dropped but was ruled out at the plate on an extremely close play.
Â
The call at the plate would not matter as Tippie set the last six batters for the Texans down in order to wrap-up the contest.
