Bobcats Pounce on Cougars to Wrap Up Karbach Round Rock Classic

ROUND ROCK, Texas – A 9-run sixth inning by Texas State (4-3) propelled the team past Washington State (5-2) 13-4 in the final game of Karbach Round Rock Classic held at Dell Diamond. The sixth inning run total set a tournament record for most runs in a frame.

Ryne Farber had another big day at the plate going 3-for-5 with four RBI and scoring a run. Also with a multi-hit contest was Alec Patino with two base knocks. The senior first baseman drove in two runs along with Rashawn Galloway.

Coming around to score three times was Alex Gonzales. Both Chris Bernal and Davis Powell scored twice apiece.

Earning the win was Taylor Seay (1-0) after recording an out on one pitch to conclude the top of the sixth. Sam Hall threw the final three frames with four strikeouts to earn the save. Taking the loss was Rylan Haider (0-1) as he surrendered two runs on two hits and a wild pitch without recording an out.

Peyton Zabel started on the rubber but went just one inning after allowing three runs on three walks and two hits. Drayton Brown came on and shut the Cougar offense down. The right-hander punched out six in 3.1 scoreless innings. Both Nicholas Holbrook and Jonathan Martinez recorded two outs each.

For the fourth consecutive game, it would be the other team getting on the scoreboard first as the Cougars scored three runs in the top of the first.

It wouldn't be until the third when the Bobcats got on the board. Alex Gonzales scored from second as Ryne Farber reached on a fielder's choice when the ball got away from the first baseman on a potential inning-ending double play.

WSU would extend their advantage back to three runs when Casen Taggart drew a bases loaded walk in the sixth.

The bottom of the frame began with Farber hitting a high fly ball down the left field line that hit the ground for a single on the first pitch he saw. Patino followed with a single of his own to see the Cougars make a call to the bullpen, the first of four in the inning.

Following a wild pitch, Galloway sent a 3-2 offering to center for a two RBI single to cut the deficit to one. The next call to the pen was made after August Ramirez singled to right on the first pitch to him. The move didn't pay off as Cameron Thompson was plunked on the first offering to load the bases.

Chase Mora would work a free pass to tie the game and Powell would be hit by a 2-2 pitch to put TXST in front and see another pitching change. After Gonzales was walked to bring in another run, Bernal singled through the right side to bring in the sixth run of the inning.

Farber sent a 1-1 offering over the leaping third baseman to bring in two more runs, after which the Cougars made their final call to the bullpen in the inning. The freshman is the first Bobcat since Tucker Redden against Rice on Mar. 17, 2021 to record two hits in one inning.

The final run of the frame was brought in off a sacrifice fly off the bat of Patino.

Another two RBI single by Farber with the bases juiced came in the seventh. The third run of the frame was by Patino as he singled to right center.

Next for TXST is a home game on Tuesday against Prairie View A&M at 6 p.m. from Bobcat Ballpark.
