Walk Record Set in Midweek Victory

SAN MARCOS, Texas – A team record 16 walks were drawn by Texas State (5-3) in a 23-2 win over Prairie View A&M (6-2) Tuesday night at Bobcat Ballpark. The previous record of 15 free passes had stood since March 12, 2010 against Penn State.

A total of 12 Bobcat batters drew a walk on the night with a team-high two being worked by Ryne Farber, Ethan Farris, Aaron, Lugo, Ben Merriman and Kameron Weil. Getting plunked twice was Alex Gonzales, who never recorded an official at bat, but did score two times.

Driving in a team best four runs on the night was August Ramirez. Scoring thrice and finishing with two RBI was Lugo. Also bringing home two runs was Alec Patino, Samson Pugh, Farris, Gonzales and Weil.

On the rubber, Tony Robie (1-1) struck out a career-high tying eight Panthers in five innings while giving up a run on three hits and four walks to earn the win. Taking the loss was Camden Farmer (0-2) after allowing four runs on five hits in 1.2 innings.

Working an inning of relief apiece was Dalton Buckingham, Colby Diaz, Tyler Cooper, and Cameron O'Banan. A strikeout apiece was recorded by Buckingham and O'Banan while Cooper punched out two in his Texas State debut.

Rashawn Galloway was the first Bobcat to get into scoring position when he tripled to left center with two outs in the first. However, he would be out at the plate trying to score on a pitch that got away from the PVAMU catcher.

The second began with Ramirez tripling to center field and then scoring on a balk. It would be the first of eight runs in the frame. Chase Mora hit his first home run of the season with a shot down that stayed just inside the left field foul pole and Patino drove in two on a single to right field. Capping off the scoring was Ramirez as he crushed a grand slam to left center.

After the Panthers scored a run in the third, the Bobcats answered back in the bottom of the frame. Lugo hit a rocket over the left centerfield wall for a solo shot and Cade Manning's double brought home Davis Powell to make it 10-1.

The score would stay the same until the sixth when PVAMU scored a run in the top of the sixth.

In the bottom of the inning, the Panthers' pitchers struggled to find the strike zone as Texas State would double its run total with a 10-run frame. The Bobcats only had three hits with all of them being singles that came within the first four batters. They would also work seven walks, be hit thrice, record a sacrifice fly and score a run on an infield fly.

The final three runs for TXST came in the eighth with two coming of free passes and the last on a sac fly off the bat of Pugh.
