Bobcats Drop Opener of Karbach Round Rock Classic

ROUND ROCK, Texas – Despite falling behind early, Texas State (3-2) had a couple of opportunities to break the game open. The Bobcats were unable to and fell Friday night 7-4 to Kansas (3-2) on the opening day of the Karbach Round Rock Classic at Dell Diamond.

August Ramirez led TXST with a 3-for-4 day at the plate with one RBI. Finishing with two base knocks and one RBI was Alec Patino while Daylan Pena was 2-for-4 with a double.

Continuing his hot streak at the plate was Ryne Farber. The freshman finished 2-of-3 at the dish with a double and RBI. He saw his consecutive reach base streak end at eight straight plate appearances on the night but closed out the evening by reaching safely in his last two times at the dish.

Taking the loss on the mound was Austin Eaton (1-1) as he gave up five runs on six hits while striking out two in 2.1 innings. Reese Dutton (1-1) earned the win with five strikeouts in five innings and surrendering two runs.

Six different Bobcats saw action out of the bullpen. Calen Graham went the longest at 1.1 innings while both Taylor Seay and Otto Wofford tossed 0.2 innings with both outs being strikeouts. Throwing an inning apiece were Cameron Bush, Nicholas Holbrook and Matthew Tippie.

The Jayhawks scored first in their first time to the plate with four runs.

After Cade Manning drew a walk to leadoff the third, Farber smacked a double to right center that brought home Manning to put the Bobcats on the scoreboard. A fielding error allowed Farber to score later in the frame to cut the deficit to 4-2.

KU responded in the bottom of the inning with a run on a solo shot to left off the bat of Jake English. The Jayhawk would drive in another run in the fourth to put them back ahead by four.

Ramirez made it a 3-run deficit in the sixth with a moonshot to right center for a solo homer and his first of the season. The Bobcats had a chance to get more back but would leave the bases loaded to end their half of the inning.

KU would go back up 7-3 in the seventh after an RBI single.

Singles by Pena and Ramirez along with a walk drawn by Farber loaded the bases with two outs. However, the Jayhawks got a strikeout to end the inning.

Leading off the ninth, Patino sent a 1-2 pitch over the right field wall for his first career home run in a Texas State uniform. That would be the only run of the frame as Kansas claimed the win.

The Karbach Round Rock Classic continues for the Bobcats tomorrow at 4 p.m. against Kentucky.
