Bobcats Claim Series Behind Big 5th Inning

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State baseball team (2-0) clinched the series over Youngstown State (0-2) with a 6-1 win on a cold and windy Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Ballpark behind a big fifth inning.

Ryne Farber was the lone Bobcat to have multiple hits on the day as he finished with a double and single while also scoring a run. Driving in three runs was Alec Patino and Chase Mora plated a run.

Earning the win on the mound was Jack Stroud (1-0) after throwing five innings and allowing an unearned run and striking out three. Taking the loss was Sloan Ulrich (0-1) as he allowed three runs behind five walks and one hit in 4.2 innings.

Drayton Brown tossed 2.1 scoreless frames with three strikeouts. Cameron Bush punched out two in a perfect inning of work and Otto Wofford struck out one while recording two outs on the rubber.

With a strong wind blowing in from the North all day, both teams were in a small ball offensive mode. Farber led off the game with a single through the left side but it would be TXST's lone hit until the fifth.

TXST almost took the lead in the third on a fly out to right. However, the Penguins' outfielder was able to throw Kameron Weil out at the plate.

A fielding error allowed Derrick Tarpley, Jr. to reach base to start off the fifth for the visitors. After a balk allowed him to move into scoring position, Eli Brown drew a free pass.

Trey Law hit a grounder to Mora for what appeared to be an inning-ending double play. However, the sophomore fumbled the ball out of his glove but saw the ball roll to Davis Powell for the out at second. Powell's throw to first was just late to turn two while Tarpley kept running and was able to score from second to put YSU ahead 1-0.

Following back-to-back walks to Cade Manning and Alex Gonales with one out, Weil grounded out to the second baseman to move both into scoring position. A 2-2 offering to Chris Bernal was in the dirt and bounced off the Penguins catcher towards the Bobcats' dugout. Unable to locate the ball quickly, not only Manning but Gonzales were able to score on the wild pitch to give TXST a 2-1 advantage.

Two walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for Patino. The Ohio transfer laced a 0-1 offering to right field for a bases clearing double. Mora would beat out an infield single to drive in the sixth run of the frame.

In the eighth, YSU was able to put two on base with one out. Wofford came on and got one Penguin looking and induced a ground out to end the visitors last threat in the game.
The series wraps up tomorrow with an 11 a.m. first pitch.
