SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State (3-0) broke out the brooms and completed the season opening sweep with an 11-1 win in seven innings over Youngstown State (0-3) Sunday afternoon at Bobcat Ballpark. It is the second straight campaign that the Bobcats have swept the opening weekend series.

While being limited to just six hits, TXST batters drew 10 walks and were hit by a pitch thrice.
Ryne Farber was issued three free passes while going 1-for-2 at the plate with one RBI, a double and scored three times.

August Ramirez drove in three runs and
Aaron Lugo finished with two RBI. Coming around to score twice was
Chase Mora,
Davis Powell and
Cameron Thompson.
Â
On the rubber,
Peyton Zabel (1-0) picked up the win after a career-high six-strikeout performance while giving up a run on five walks and two hits. Lane Rhodes (0-1) took the loss as he surrendered four runs on three walks while not recording an out.

The trio of
Keller Eberly,
Rhett McCaffety and
Matthew Tippie all threw a scoreless frame of relief. McCaffety struck out the side on 11 pitches and Tippie had two punch outs.

In the first, the Penguins scored first with a run on a bases loaded walk drawn by Derrick Tarpley, Jr. More runs were prevented from being scored when Zabel got the next batter to go down swinging for the third out.

Farber began the bottom of the frame by drawing his first free pass of the game. After Powell was plunked,
Alec Patino was walked to load the bases. Mora worked the count full and got a free pass to first base that brought home Farber to tie the game.

After a pitching change, Ramirez was hit on a 0-2 offering to bring in another run to put the Bobcats in front. Two batters later, Lugo laced a single to right that plated two to increase the advantage to 4-1.

The lead increased to four in the second on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Alec Patino. Ramirez hit his run scoring double to right center in the fourth, Thompson smashed a 1-1 offering for a solo shot to start off the fifth and a balk in the sixth brough in a run in the sixth to make it a 9-1 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Thompson beat out a slow roller to third for an infield single and Lugo followed by reaching base on a free pass. Farber smacked an RBI double to right center two batters later. The game ended when Powell grounded out to the shortstop that scored Lugo to end the game by run rule.

Next up for Texas State is its first road game when the team makes a trip to Fort Worth to take on fifth-ranked TCU at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
