TROY, Ala. – A goal with just under eight minutes to play by
Marie Philipzen was the difference as Texas State (7-3-4, 3-0-2 Sun Belt) left the Troy Soccer Complex Thursday night with a 2-1 win over Troy (4-6-2, 0-4-1 Sun Belt). The victory extended the Bobcats' unbeaten streak to nine matches.
"It's never easy to get three points on the road and tonight was no exception. It was a hard-fought match that took a complete 90-minute effort," said head coach
Steve Holeman. "We'll enjoy this win and head home to get ready for the next one."
For Philipzen, the goal was the first of her collegiate career. Opening the scoring was
Mya Ulloa with her third goal of the season and ninth in her career.
TXST was outshot 11-9 and 6-3 in shots on goal but saw
Caitlyn Draper make five saves on the night. The sophomore now has 115 career saves to move up to ninth on the program's career list.
A slow start offensively saw the Bobcats not attempt their first shot of the night until the 32nd minute. Before that, the Trojans took three shots but only placed one on frame.
Sydney Bassa attempted back heel attempt was blocked off a corner kick and
Lily Erb's follow-up went wide left.
Off another corner kick with just under three minutes left in the first half,
Kennley Bradley got her head behind the ball but saw it hit off
Lucy Hart and out of bounds.
Texas State put pressure on the Troy defense to start the second half. In the 58th minute,
Mady Soumare spun and passed the ball to
Chloe Jones, who chipped it into the box on the first touch. Ulloa beat a defender and the goalkeeper to the ball to get a toe on it and send it into the back of the net to break the scoreless contest.
Late in the 79th minute, Dolce Villaflor's corner kick was just out of the reach of Draper and went into the goal to tie the contest.
A little over three and a half minutes later,
Victoria Meza threw the ball into
Lucy Hart. The senior defender sent the ball into the box. It went over both
Mady Soumare and a defender and bounced on the edge of the six-yard box. Philipzen was able to get around a Trojan to knock the ball into the open net with her right knee for the 2-1 advantage.
