SAN MARCOS, Texas – For the second straight match, late match heroics helped Texas State claim a victory with Sunday afternoon's contest ending 3-2 over ULM. Sophomore
Victoria Meza scored the match-winner with nearly seven minutes remaining that helped extend the Bobcats' unbeaten streak to 10 matches.
With the win, TXST is now 8-3-4 on the season and 4-0-2 in the Sun Belt Conference while the Warhawks fall to 8-5-2 overvall and 2-2-2 in league action.
Â
Opening the scoring was
Kaylie Smith in the 14th minute. The play began as
Mya Ulloa sent in a free kick from the left side that went long past the goal.
Kennley Bradley headed the ball back into the front of the frame where Smith ran onto the bouncing ball and knocked it home with her right foot to mark the second straight contest in which the sophomore has scored.
Â
Twice, with nearly 20 minutes left in the first half, the Warhawks had a chance to tie the contest.
Caitlyn Draper came up with a big save on Mara Grutkamp in the run of play as he tipped the ball over the crossbar. The ensuing corner kick saw the sophomore grab a headed attempt by Seth Strutton.
Â
Just over a minute later, TXST nearly went up by two goals when
Mady Soumare was taken down in the box.
Sydney Bassa stepped up to take the attempt but Jennifer Handy made a diving stop to keep it a one-goal contest.
Â
Helen Alormenu was fouled just outside the box with nearly five minutes until halftime. The Ghanan's free kick went over the ULM wall but was caught by Handy.
Â
Exactly seven minutes into the second half, Alormenu got by a Sophia Youngman inside the box but was taken down by her to award the Bobcats another penalty kick. Ulloa stepped up and put the spot kick into the bottom right corner to extend the advantage to 2-0.
Â
ULM answered four and half minutes later when Skylar Blaise slotted a low shot into the bottom left corner. Then with less than 13 minutes left on the clock, Giulia Franco was able to get around a TXST defender and her pass found Bernadett Stefan, whose right-footed shot beat Draper to tie the match.
Â
Alormenu would get her shirt pulled and taken down on the left wing about 10 yards outside the penalty box for a short free kick. Ulloa sent the ball into the box that
Zoe Junior headed down towards the top of the six-yard box. The ball bounced high off the ground and ricocheted off a Warhawk defender straight to Meza, who was able to redirect it with her right-foot just inside the far post to put Texas State ahead 3-2.
Â
For the match, the Warhawks held a 13-11 advantage in shots and 6-5 in shots on goal. Meza was the lone Bobcat with multiple shots with two.
Â
Draper made four saves on the afternoon. The Hutto, Texas native now has 119 career saves as she moved ahead of Lauren Frazier (2010-11) for eighth in program history.
