SAN MARCOS, Texas – After their performances on the field and in the classroom this past season, Alonzo Edwards Jr.,
Titus Lyons and
John Oehrlein were named to the 2023 Academic All-District team, the College Sports Communicators (CSC) announced.
Edwards Jr., Lyons and Oehrlein were key contributors for the Bobcats in their historic season in 2023. Each played in 12 or more games, with each player representing a different phase of the Texas State team that won the program's first ever bowl game and won an FBS program record eight games.
Edwards Jr., a criminal justice major, started seven of his 13 games played as a defensive back. He had a career-high 37 tackles (22 solo), 3.5 TFLs, 2.0 sacks and a forced fumble. He was also named an Allstate AFCA Good Works Team nominee in the summer.
Lyons, who played in 12 games as a tight end, had five catches for 26 yards this season. The general studies major has played in 20 career games as a Bobcat after joining the team starting with the 2022 campaign.
Oehrlein was the team's starting long snapper in his first season as a Bobcat. The management of technical education major helped
Mason Shipley become the program's record holder for field goals made in a single-season (15) and snapped to the program's all-time leading punter,
Seamus O'Kelly.
The trio of CSC Academic All-District honors are the most in a season for Texas State football since 2006. Last year, Russell Baker was the lone Bobcat to earn the academic all-district accolades.
The Academic All-District Football teams are selected by CSC and recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.
All Academic All-District honorees are forwarded to the Academic All-America ballot. The 2023 Academic All-Americans will be announced on January 23.
