MARICOPA, Ariz. – Texas State men's golf held the top spot of the inaugural National Golf Invitational (NGI) to win the team championship on Sunday at the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club.
Marcelo Garza recorded his best finish of the season in the top-5.
This is the third team championship of the season for the Bobcats and fourth finish in the top-five.
In the final round of the NGI Texas State shot four-over par to finish the tournament seven-under 857. The 54-hole total ties for the third best of the season. The Bobcats also recorded a seven-under 857 total when they won the Tempest Collegiate in the fall.
Texas State finished one stroke ahead of Wyoming and Penn State to capture the championship among 13 teams. The Bobcats led the field in birdies, recording 59.
Marcelo Garza led the Bobcats all three days of the NGI where he recorded a new 18-hole low and his best finish of the season. Garza's four-under 212 landed him tied for fifth, and his second straight time finishing at the top of the Bobcat lineup. The junior recorded four birdies in the final round, with two back-to-back on holes 13 and 14.
Sakke Siltala ended his first year of his collegiate career with a three-under 213 finish to tie for seventh. This is Siltala's fifth second place finish in the Bobcat lineup. The freshman was second in birdies among 70 competitors after recording a total of 16.
Jack Burke tied for 21
st one-over par in his highest round of the tournament.
Kasper Nyland shot his second round of 73 in the tournament to finish tied for 27
th two-over. Nyland co-led the tournament in eagles with two, including his final one of the tournament on hole 7 today. The Denmark native ends the season with four eagles alongside Siltala.
Tom Roed Karlsen rounds out the Bobcat lineup six-over 222, his fourth best 54-hole total of the season.
