Baseball Drops Series Opener at Louisiana

LAFAYETTE, La. – The five-game winning streak for Texas State (33-17, 15-10 Sun Belt) ended on Friday with a 7-3 loss to Louisiana (33-18, 15-10 Sun Belt) from Russo Park.

Jackson Nezuh (8-4) earned the win after going seven innings and striking out seven while allowing two runs on four hits. Levi Wells (7-3) recorded six punch outs but surrendered six runs on six hits and three walks in 6.2 innings to take the loss.

Only Bobcat used out of the bullpen was Jonathan Martinez, who threw the final 1.1 with a strikeout.

Daylan Pena went 2-for-4 at the plate. Both Jose Gonzalez and Peyton Lewis hit a double on the night. Lewis drove in two runs and Rashawn Galloway finished with an RBI.

The Ragin' Cajuns got on the board in the first when Max Marusak hit a double on the first pitch he saw and then came around on a sacrifice bunt and groundout. They would extend their advantage to two runs in the fourth behind a Bobcat error.

Chase Mora drew a walk in the fifth for TXST's first baserunner of the game. Galloway would single through the right side on the very first pitch to him, however both would be left stranded.

Louisiana would string together multiple hits to extend their advantage to 5-0 after six complete.

In the next half inning, Pena and Mora hit back-to-back singles and both moved into scoring position on a groundout. Lewis battled until he sent a 2-2 pitch to right field for a ground rule double that cut the deficit to three.

The Cajuns got a run back in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Marusak. A solo homer by Carson Roccaforte increased the lead to 7-2 through the eighth.

Gonzalez led off the ninth with a double into the right field corner and Pena sent the first pitch he saw to left for a single to put runners on the corners. Two batters later, Galloway hit a grounder up the middle that was fielded by the shortstop. Pena was out at second but Galloway was able to beat out the throw to bring home the final run of the game.
