LAFAYETTE, La. – Over the last two innings, Texas State (33-18, 15-11 Sun Belt) scored five runs but it wasn't enough to overcome Louisiana (34-18, 16-10 Sun Belt) in a 9-5 setback Saturday afternoon from Russo Park.
Â
Zeke Wood (2-3) punched out five in 5.1 innings while allowing four runs on six hits as he took the loss. Carson Fluno (2-0) got the win as he threw five shutout innings and struck out seven. Earning his second save of the season was David Christie after throwing the finale four innings.
Â
Working an inning out of the bullpen was
Nathan Medrano. Recording two outs on the mound was
Reece Gould while
Rhett McCaffety,
Austin Smith and
Otto Wofford worked a third of an inning apiece.
Â
Going 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI, two runs and a home run was
Jose Gonzalez. Coming off the bench,
Kameron Weil finished 2-for-2 and scored twice. Also finishing with two base knocks were
Chase Mora and
Daylan Pena.
Â
The bottom of the first repeated itself from Friday night as Max Marusak leadoff with a double, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on a groundout to
Davis Powell to give the Ragin' Cajuns an early 1-0 lead.
Â
In the third, Louisiana loaded the bases with three consecutive bunt singles. Only a run would be scored with it being on a sacrifice fly on a close play at the plate. The advantage would be extended to 9-0 with a run in the fifth, three in both the sixth and seventh frames.
Â
After a 42-minute delay due to lightning and rain, Wofford struck out the lone batter he faced to end the seventh.
Â
Weil began the next frame with a single back up the middle and Gonzalez followed with a double to put both in scoring position. A walk to Pena loaded the bases and then Mora put the Bobcats on the scoreboard with a single to center that plated a run.
August Ramirez singled to plate a run and the third tally of the frame came on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to six runs.
Â
A single back up the middle was Weil's second base knock of the game with one gone in the ninth. Two batters later,
Jose Gonzalez went the opposite way for his 32nd career home run for the finale runs of the game. The round tripper places him alone in second in team history.
Â
The series concludes on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
