Baseball Splits Doubleheader to Claim Road Series over Monarchs

NORFOLK, Va. – Both teams claimed a one-run victory on the day as Texas State (29-16, 12-9 Sun Belt) and Old Dominion (28-15, 11-10 Sun Belt) split a doubleheader Saturday at Bud Metheny Stadium. The Monarchs took game one 2-1 and the Bobcats come out on top 12-11 in 10 innings in the night cap to take the series victory.

Game 1
Tony Robie (5-2) took the loss after allowing two runs on three hits over five innings while striking out five. Sam Armstrong (8-1) recorded four strikeouts in six innings with only a run given to pick up the win while John Holobetz earned his fifth save after throwing the final three frames.

Both Rashawn Galloway and Cade Manning finished with two hits apiece on the afternoon. Also recording a base knock was Ryan Leary and Chase Mora.

It would take until the fifth for either team to get on the scoreboard. Galloway started the frame with a double to right center and would score on Manning's RBI single.

The Monarchs answered back with back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the frame with one out. The second occurring on a routine grounder to Daylan Pena but hitting off something in the dirt and bouncing out of his reach. Two batters later, an RBI single from Chris Dengler put the hosts in front 2-1.

Over the next two innings, TXST would get two runners on base each time but leave them stranded.

Game 2
Recording two hits in the game was Galloway and Mora. Ben McClain finished with three RBI and Ryder Hernandez drove in two runs. Scoring twice on the night was Peyton Lewis, Galloway and Leary.

Triston Dixon (4-1) worked the final three innings while striking out three to pick up the win on the mound. Taking the loss was Jacob Gomez (1-2) as he allowed two runs on three walks and two hits over three frames.

Starting on the rubber was Zeke Wood. The senior right-hander struck out four in 6.1 innings but surrendered four runs on nine hits. He now has 206 punch outs in his Bobcat career to place him in a tie for seventh in team history.

ODU struck first with two runs in the second behind two doubles and a throwing error while trying to catch a runner stealing a base.

The next half inning saw Leary reach via a throwing error from his counterpart. After Peyton Lewis drew a walk, a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position. Ryder Hernandez fouled off two pitches before send one down the left field line that tied the game. The sophomore would later come home on a wild pitch to put the Bobcats up 3-2.

With one gone in the fourth, Galloway and Leary singled while Cade Manning drew a walk to load the bases. A wild pitch allowed Leary to score and then a catcher's interference call reloaded the bases. McClain hit a 3-2 offering to left center for a bases clearing double. The five-run frame was capped off by a single off the bat of Mora.

Two more runs were put up by the Bobcats in the fifth on a Manning double and sacrifice fly from Leary to increase the advantage to 10-2.

ODU tallied three runs in the seventh on a homer from Hunter Fitz-Gerald, his 19th of the season, to cut the lead to five. A four-run frame in part to three errors in the eighth made it 10-9 in favor of TXST. Pena helped save more runs from being scored in the eighth as he crashed into the wall catching a foul ball that ended the frame with two on base.

The game was sent to extras as Tyler Wheeler turned on a 3-2 offering that went just fair down the left field line.

A single through the left side and then a wild pitch put Mora into scoring position to start the 10th. Following an intentional walk to Gonzalez, Pena singled to right center that put Texas State back in the lead and runners on the corners. Galloway hit a shot to the third baseman, who was unable to field it cleanly, which allowed the freshman catcher to beat it out to prevent a double play and bring home Gonzalez.

Two strikeouts started the next half inning. The first pitch to Fitz-Gerald saw him send it over the right center wall to cut the Bobcats' advantage to 12-11. After a walk, Dixon induced Jay Tarkenton to pop up to Hernandez to close out the game.

Next up for TXST is a midweek game at home against Incarnate Word on Tuesday set for 6 p.m.
